Analysis: Russia's Putin risks losing touch amid protests (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Vladimir Putin is looking increasingly out of touch in Russia after the opposition brought tens of thousands of people out onto the streets of Moscow for the second time in two weeks to demand a parliamentary election be re-run.

But the looming New Year holiday in Russia means there is likely to be a pause in the biggest opposition protests since he rose to power 12 years ago and he will hope they will now at least temporarily lose momentum.

The protesters say they are tired of his domination of Russia after eight years as president and now four as prime minister, and suspect the December 4 election, won by his United Russia party, was rigged.

First Putin dismissed the protesters as chattering monkeys financed from abroad, then he backed President Dmitry Medvedev's proposal for gradual political reform and later the 59-year-old leader had a former KGB spy appointed as Kremlin chief of staff.

The gulf between Putin and many of his people has convinced many that he has lost his popular touch and is refusing to take the protests as seriously as many of his closest allies do as he prepares to reclaim the presidency in an election in March.

"They do not understand," one person close to policy makers said of Putin and Medvedev. "One is weak and the other does not want to listen, though people have tried to explain the seriousness of the situation."

That could bode badly for the long-term stability of the world's biggest country and energy producer.

Opponents say Putin's inner circle is a small group of former KGB spies, businessmen and Kremlin officials who have little empathy with the Internet-savvy generation of younger, urban Russians who have come out onto the streets this month.

But Putin's portrayal of the protesters as pawns financed by a foreign power has also contrasted with the conclusions drawn by some of the other men at his court.

Kremlin deputy chief of staff Vladislav Surkov, who helped Putin craft his tightly controlled political system, warned on Friday that some enemies wanted to provoke a revolution but that the protesters were among the best people in society.

PUTIN'S COURT

"The best part of our society, or rather the most productive part, is demanding respect," Surkov, one of Putin's most powerful advisers on domestic policy, told Izvestia. "You cannot simply swipe away their opinions in an arrogant way."

An even closer Putin ally, former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, joined Saturday's protest in Moscow, warning that Russia needed much more serious political reforms to ensure a stable development.

"I came today because I do not believe the elections were fair and I believe we need to hold an investigation and punish those responsible up to and including criminal responsibility," Kudrin, 51, told Reuters at the protest.

"There is a possibility today, without any sort of revolution, to make a transformation to ensure fair elections and real representation in parliament," said Kudrin, who helped Putin get his first job in the Kremlin in 1996.

But Putin has other powerful advisers too.

Nikolai Patrushev, the powerful head of the Russian security council and former head of the FSB state security service, said this month that Russia should impose "rational regulation" of the Internet.

Another former KGB spy, Sergei Ivanov, was appointed Kremlin chief of staff on Thursday and Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin, a Putin ally, has voiced concern about the role played by the Internet in the Arab Spring revolts.

Patrushev, 60, Ivanov, 58, and Sechin, 51, are all old friends of Putin and though they may be divided by tactics and court politics, they are ultimately hardliners.

Medvedev, Russia's 46-year-old iPad-carrying president, may have more sense of the anger against Putin but he is weak, sources close to the situation said.

"Medvedev understands this all a little better because he is a person less prone to conspiratorial theories," said a source with close ties to the leadership, adding that Russia's leaders were hoping the protests would burn themselves out.

"Putin has realized his popularity is declining," the source said.

PUTIN'S POPULARITY

For Putin, who has used his popularity to justify his plan to run for the presidency in the March 4 presidential election, that may be a hard thing to accept.

Putin still remains Russia's most popular politician and though his ratings are high by Western standards, they are low according to Putin's own expectations.

Russia's biggest independent pollster, Levada-Center, said 63 percent of Russians approved of his activities as prime minister in a poll carried out on Dec 16-20.

But that is just three percentage points above the lowest level since August 2000, when he was dogged by the botched reaction to a naval disaster that killed all 118 crewmen aboard the submarine Kursk.

"They are worrying and they are nervous," said Mikhail Kasyanov, who served as prime minister under Putin for four years before joining the opposition. "And they really do have something to be worried and nervous about."

CHATTERING MONKEYS?

Putin seems intent on riding out the protests. While tens of thousands turned out for the second time on two weeks on Saturday, he is likely to take comfort from the fact that there was not a huge increase in the numbers.

Tens of thousands protested in cities across Russia on December 10. On Saturday, organizers said they had gathered 120,000 in Moscow though the police put the number at 30,000.

The truth may lie somewhere in between: Russia's Navaya Gazeta opposition newspaper said its reporters counted more than 102,000 while estimates from state news agency RIA put the crowd at about 56,000.

Putin appears to reason that even though the protests are much larger than any he has faced before, it is still a relatively small percentage of the population that is protesting in a country of more than 140 million.

He is counting on the support of the many millions in the provinces who regard him as the man who restored order to Russia after the chaos of the decade that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In a televised question and answer session with the Russian people, Putin used a reference to the chattering monkeys known as "Bandar Log" in Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book to describe the protesters and said he thought the white ribbons which are the symbol of the election protests were condoms.

But Alexei Navalny, the most prominent leader of the divided opposition groups which refuse to negotiate with the Kremlin, turned Putin's comments back against the authorities.

"Hi all of you Bandar Logs and Internet hamsters: You were called Bandar Log but you came here today. But where is the chap who called us that?" Navalny, 35, told tens of thousands of people at the protest in Moscow's Sakharov Avenue.

Navalny's satire may excite the crowds and the thousands who read his blogs but there is still no leader of the fragmented opposition. As if to illustrate that, dozens of different leaders addressed the crowd in Moscow.

United or not, Navalny warned that there were enough people at the protest to take the Kremlin by force, though he quickly added that this was not the plan.

"If the authorities continue to cheat the people and thieves and if those two swindlers continue the usurpation of power - they have stolen it from the people - then the people will come and take it back because it is theirs by rights," he told Reuters.

So does he plan a revolution?

"It is not a revolution," he said. "The revolution, the illegal takeover of power, was implemented by Putin and Medvedev. Here there will be a legal return of power to the people."

NBA's return draws big TV ratings on Christmas

(AP) ? NBA fans seem more excited about basketball's return than bitter about the lockout based on television ratings for the league's delayed openers.

The five Christmas games Sunday averaged 6.2 million viewers based on fast national ratings, up from 6 million last year.

The Bulls-Lakers matchup was the third most-watched regular-season game ever on ABC, behind only last year's highly anticipated Heat-Lakers showdown and another meeting between Miami and LA in 2004.

Chris Paul's Clippers debut in the nightcap against the Warriors earned a 2.2 rating, up 69 percent over last year's Portland-Golden State telecast in the same slot.

It was ESPN's highest-rated Christmas prime-time game. The day's first contest, Celtics-Knicks on TNT, was the most viewed Christmas game ever on cable. The 4.0 rating was up 48 percent from last year's Bulls-Knicks game on ESPN.

The first night game on ESPN ? Magic-Thunder ? drew a 1.8, up 29 percent from last year's Denver-Oklahoma City matchup. The afternoon's finals rematch on ABC, the Heat's rout of the Mavericks, earned a 4.9, up 7 percent from Boston-Orlando last year.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program.

Lugar: Paul not in GOP mainstream

Texas Rep. and presidential candidate Ron Paul is out of line with the mainstream GOP when it comes to foreign policy, Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) says.

In an interview aired Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," host Candy Crowley asked Lugar: "Is that a Republican party message?"

?

Replied the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, "That's one Republican's message." And he?went on to say that Paul's left-of-Obama foreign policy views were not representative of the party.

?

"No, of course not. ?And it's not a message which really a president of the United States could ever afford to extend. In other words, we're a -- a party and a -- a president of leadership, leadership in the world," he said. "We have a fleet that covers all the seas, that, as a matter of fact, makes foreign trade possible, trade of all sorts. ?We're the only country that can go everywhere all over the world, and, therefore, indispensable to our allies as well as to our own interests."

?

"These are very, very important parts of our national strength. And they involve foreign policy. They involve armed forces and a combination of these," Lugar said.

Sea Shepherd says drones find, photograph Japan's whaling fleet (Reuters)

SYDNEY (Reuters) ? Hardline whaling opponents attempting to stop Japan's annual whale hunt in the Antarctic said Sunday they had intercepted and photographed its whaling fleet using pilotless drone aircraft.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society said it located the Japanese factory ship Nisshin Maru off Australia's western coast Saturday using the drones, the first time this season it has made contact with the whalers.

However, other Japanese ships shielded the vessel "to allow it to escape," Sea Shepherd said in a statement.

"We caught them due west of Perth," founder Paul Watson told Reuters by satellite phone from the ship Steve Irwin. "For the next few days we will be chasing them. We are heading south."

The two drones are equipped with cameras and detection equipment and allow Sea Shepherd to monitor the whaling fleet from a distance, he said.

Watson said Sea Shepherd's three ships were well outside Antarctic waters when the Japanese vessel was seen. The Sea Shepherd waited for the Nisshin Maru after hearing from fishermen it had sailed through the Lombok Strait in Indonesia on its voyage to Antarctic waters.

The Sea Shepherd society's annual attempts to stop the Japanese whale hunt by "direct action" have been widely criticised by other environmentalists and governments, particularly Japan. However, it also has influential supporters.

Watson said sympathisers in New Jersey in the United States contributed to the cost of the two drones.

An international moratorium on whaling has been in place since 1986, but Japan exploits a loophole allowing whaling for scientific purposes to justify its annual hunt.

Comments Requested On On-Farm Energy Creation

Comments Requested On On-Farm Energy Creation

CANADA - The Ministry of Agriculture is inviting British Columbians to contribute to the development of two bylaw standards related to the creation of on-farm energy.

One bylaw standard will cover anaerobic digestion on farms in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and the other will cover combined heat and power co-generation in greenhouses in the ALR. Both systems present farmers possibilities to improve operating efficiency.

Anaerobic digestion systems use a combination of manure and organic materials to produce renewable energy in the form of methane gas. This methane gas can be upgraded to natural-gas quality or converted to electricity. A discussion paper and survey propose:

  • Minimum farm size on using a system.
  • Restrictions on the materials and their origins that can be used in the system.
  • Planning, administrative and record-keeping requirements.
  • Criteria for anaerobic digestion activities that would not require local-government rezoning.
Greenhouse growers use natural gas-based combined heat and power co-generation systems to produce electricity, heat and carbon dioxide, which are used to fertilize greenhouse crops. A discussion paper and survey propose:
  • Requirements that cogeneration production be commensurate with the heat demand on the farm and/or total greenhouse size.
  • Minimum operating efficiency.
  • Sites and management that minimize noise impacts.
  • Criteria for cogeneration activities that would not require local-government rezoning.
Bylaw standards are not legally binding. Rather, they provide interested local governments with criteria on a topic, should they be interested in developing a bylaw. The call for public comments follows the distribution of the ministry?s discussion papers to local governments and stakeholders.

Respondents are advised to familiarise themselves with the respective discussion paper prior to participating in the survey.

The surveys will be open until March 15, 2012. All comments will be included in the ministry?s consideration in developing the bylaw standards.

This discussion paper and survey are available here.

Tesla confirms Model S pricing and options: $49,900 and up after tax credits

Tesla Motors has talked a fair bit about pricing for its Model S sedan over the past couple of years, but it's now finally set things in stone. US pricing for the base model will start at $49,900, although that's only after you factor in the $7,500 federal tax credit. As Tesla notes, that's the very same pricing that the company first promised way back when the car was unveiled in 2009, but it does come with a few trade-offs (more on that later). Opting for that base model will get you 40 kWh battery, along with 19-inch wheels and the 17-inch touchscreen that's included on all models (complete with a number of connectivity options). The standard Model S can also be upgraded to a 60kWh or 85kWh package for an extra $10,000 and $20,000, respectively (including other performance improvements), while the top-of-the-line Model S Performance option starts at $79,900 (also after the tax credit). Somewhat curiously, while that stand-out touchscreen is standard on all models, you'll have to add the $3,750 tech package if you want built-in navigation and other options like a high definition back-up camera. You can price things out for yourself and check out all of the customizations options at the source link below.

More impact rookies than Newton, Miller (AP)

One of the fears at the end of the 4 1/2-month lockout was how much all the missed practice and meeting time would affect rookies.

Three weeks from the end of the season, those concerns appear ill-founded.

Sure, there have been some first-year flops, from Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert to Giants defensive back Prince Amukamara to Chiefs receiver Jonathan Baldwin ? the latter two slowed by injuries, but mediocre when they have gotten onto the field. And yes, some or all of them might turn out to be All-Pros down the line.

Yet, nearly each of the 32 teams has had an impact rookie this year. Some, such as quarterbacks Cam Newton in Carolina and Andy Dalton in Cincinnati on offense, Denver linebacker Von Miller and Arizona cornerback Patrick Peterson on defense, have made headlines and highlight reels weekly. Others have flown a bit lower while contributing quite a bit.

Take Detroit's Titus Young, a second-round draft choice from Boise State who has a habit of making long gains ? not a bad trait for a wide receiver. He's overshadowed by veterans Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson, but has made enough splashy plays, including four catches longer than 40 yards, to help Detroit stay in the wild-card chase.

"Yeah, he's gaining experience each week and he's making more plays each week and it's obviously something we need when we see teams that trick up Calvin and want to game plan to take Calvin away," coach Jim Schwartz said. "The arrow has been going up for Titus the whole season. He's had ups and downs like any rookie does, but overall, he's been trending up, and you're seeing some of the explosive plays that we know we can get from him."

Opponents are seeing the explosiveness of two young defenders: Houston linebacker Brooks Reed and end J.J. Watt.

Second-round pick Reed has set a Texans rookie record for sacks with six, has 11 quarterback hits and a fumble recovery. Pretty good for a guy who made the starting lineup when Texans star Mario Williams was lost for the season in Week 5 and Houston had to move Connor Barwin into Williams' spot.

First-rounder Watt has started from the outset, has 4 1/2 sacks and shares the team lead in tackles for loss (10). He's also recovered two fumbles.

Houston ? and perhaps the league's ? most surprisingly effective rookie has been quarterback T.J. Yates. A third-stringer (and fifth-round selection from North Carolina), Yates stepped in when both Matts, Schaub and Leinart, went down with season-ending injuries. All he's done is guide the Texans to a huge comeback victory at Cincinnati to clinch the first playoff berth in their 10-season existence.

"That's an impressive thing," said Panthers linebacker Dan Connor, whose team faces Houston this week. "A lot was on the line for them and he helped them win. That says a lot about him as a quarterback to be able to do that, especially when he's a rookie."

Yates wasn't given the reins, nor even considered for them, when the season kicked off. Newton and Dalton, of course, were behind center from the beginning, a trend that developed in the last decade and has led to Ben Roethlisberger, Vince Young, Matt Ryan and Sam Bradford winning top offensive rookie honors. It never happened before Roethlisberger arrived in Pittsburgh in 2004.

Newton and Dalton might be the front-runners for the award this season, especially with Cowboys sensation RB DeMarco Murray gone with a broken right ankle. But nobody should ignore Washington RB Roy Helu; WRs A.J. Green of Cincinnati, Doug Baldwin of Seattle, and Julio Jones of Atlanta; Philadelphia center Jason Kelce; Oakland guard Stefan Wisniewski; Miami center Mike Pouncey; and tackles Orlando Franklin of Denver, Marcus Gilbert of Pittsburgh and Nate Solder of New England.

Arizona's Peterson has taken his spectacular efforts to special teams, where he has tied a league mark with four punt returns for TDs, one from 99 yards and another from 80.

"There's no secret there, he's an outstanding player for the reasons that he's had success this year," Browns coach Pat Shurmur said as he prepared to face Arizona this weekend. "When you have a guy that's scored four touchdowns, two of which won games at the end ? I know for a fact it was the Rams, he beat them twice on punt returns ? I'm going to remember that Sunday."

Other defensive players to remember along with Miller, who quickly has become the dynamic leader in Denver, and Peterson, include linebackers Ryan Kerrigan of Washington, KJ Wright of Seattle, Justin Houston of Kansas City, Jacquian Williams of the Giants, and two from Tennessee: Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy; linemen Aldon Smith of San Francisco, Adrian Clayborn of Tampa Bay, Marcell Dareus of Buffalo, Robert Quinn of St. Louis, Jabaal Sheard of Cleveland, Muhammad Wilkerson of the Jets, and two more from Tennessee: Jurrell Casey and Karl Klug; and backs Jimmy Wilson of Miami and Jimmy Smith of Baltimore.

One thing is certain: Any rookies who have played regularly for their teams in 2011 no longer can be considered untested. Indeed, Yates might go through the rest of his career without ever being challenged the way he is being now.

DIY Christmas: Build the Ultimate Stocking

December 16, 2011 5:00 PM

1. Stock the Stuff

Nothing beats a bulging stocking on Christmas morning, but the traditional cloth design can hold only so many goodies. This super stocking redeploys the tough Tyvek FedEx envelopes that arrive with holiday gifts. Fully loaded, the fibrous polyethylene sock holds 50 pounds. That's enough for a generous load of toys, sugarplums or even coal. Gather up four 15 x 12?inch envelopes, a ?-inch eyebolt for wood or masonry (depending on the mantel), an S-hook, Duco Cement, eight grommets and a tough, ?-inch-diameter nylon rope.

2. Cut and Paste

Double the strength of the envelopes by gluing together two pairs of inside-out Tyvek bags (one inside another) with Duco Cement. Cut off the lower left corner of one envelope pair. Fold and glue a lower corner of the second envelope pair into a tapered stocking tip. Cut off the top flap of the lower envelope and fit it over the upper envelope's open corner, adjusting the fit until it all looks sock-like. Apply plenty of cement along the seams and lightly press the pieces together. Wipe away the excess cement. Let dry.

3. Hang with Care

Fold and glue down the adhesive sealing flap on the top envelope. Install eight grommets through the double layer on the top edge. Drive the eyebolt into the mantel. Thread the nylon rope through the grommets and tie it up. Use the S-hook to hang the rope from the eyebolt.

4. Get Festive

To decorate the outside of the stocking, use rivets or Sharpies to write in a name?or a wish list.

"Artist" leads Golden Globes. Do Oscars await? (Reuters)

BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) ? Silent movie "The Artist" painted a pretty picture at the Golden Globe nominations Thursday, leading all movies with six nods, including best film comedy or musical in the race to Hollywood's Oscars.

"The Artist," a silent movie shot in black and white and made in the same way films were before the "talkies," has earned numerous spots atop critics' lists and its director, Frenchman Michel Hazanavicius, thinks he knows why.

"Whether in Italy, the U.K., Spain or Germany, everywhere is the same kind of reaction, and I think that says something about the format. Silent used to be thought of as old. Now, it's no more old or new. It's ageless," he told Reuters.

Along with best film musical or comedy, "The Artist" earned nods for French actor Jean Dujardin, supporting actress Berenice Bejo, director and writer Hazanavicus and musical score.

The Golden Globes, voted on by about 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are among the most-watched awards programs leading up to the Oscars in February.

But in the race for Oscars, the world's top movie honors from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, "The Artist" already faces competition from drama "The Descendants," starring George Clooney as a man struggling to keep his family together, and civil rights-era film "The Help," which tells of black maids in segregated Mississippi dealing with racism.

Each of those two films earned five Golden Globe nods, including both in the category of best film drama, and both have won fans among critics and audiences in a year shaping up as one in which feel-good films or those with a cathartic ending are winning fans and award votes.

Director Tate Taylor called "The Help" a movie about people doing things to change their lives, and Jim Burke, producer for the "Descendants," said that film sent audiences a message of hope.

Along with best film drama, "Descendants" scored nominations for Clooney as best actor and Alexander Payne for directing and writing, among its honors. "The Help" earned nominations for Viola Davis for best actress in a drama and Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain for supporting actress.

HELP FOR 'HUGO'

Those are not the only movies making their mark this award season, and industry watchers should not count out Martin Scorsese's love letter to movies and the creative arts with 3D film "Hugo," which similarly wowed critics.

"Hugo rallied spectacularly today after being shut out at SAG," said Oscar pundit Tom O'Neil of website Gold Derby, noting Wednesday's nominees by the Screen Actors Guild. "Hugo" producer Graham King told Reuters he hoped the recognition by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would help lure more people to theaters to see it.

"The Help," "Descendants" and "Hugo" will compete for best film drama at the Golden Globes against Steven Spielberg's "War Horse," baseball movie "Moneyball" and Clooney's political film "The Ides of March."

Golden Globe movie nominations are grouped into two categories -- dramas and musicals or comedies -- and "The Artist" will vie for best comedy or musical.

In that group, it faces director Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," cancer comedy "50/50," box-office hit "Bridesmaids" and "My Week with Marilyn,' starring Michelle Williams in the role of Marilyn Monroe. Her work put Williams in the Golden Globe race for best actress in a musical or comedy.

Vying for best dramatic actress alongside "Help" star Davis are perennial favorite Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," Glenn Close playing a woman masquerading as a male butler in "Albert Nobbs," newcomer Rooney Mara for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and Tilda Swinton in dark parenting movie, "We Need to Talk About Kevin."

In the race for dramatic actor, Clooney squares off against Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar," Michael Fassbender playing a sex addict in "Shame," Brad Pitt in "Moneyball" and Ryan Gosling for "The Ides of March." Gosling earned two nominations Thursday, his second coming in the comedic actor category for "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

In the director group, Payne and Hazanavicius take on Scorsese ("Hugo") and Allen ("Midnight in Paris,") along with Clooney for "The Ides of March."

Foreign-language film nominees were Angelina Jolie's Bosnian war movie "In the Land of Blood and Honey," Chinese movie "The Flowers of War," Belgian film "The Kid with a Bike," Iran's "A Separation," and Spanish movie "The Skin I Live In."

The Golden Globe Awards will be given out on January 15, hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais and telecast live on NBC. Oscar nods come out on January 24.

Last year at the Golden Globes, Gervais ruffled the feathers of the HFPA with caustic jokes about the award show's reputation, but was invited back to emcee the event this year.

HFPA President Takla-O'Reilly made light of that dust-up on Thursday, calling Gervais a "naughty, naughty schoolboy" and saying only one topic was off-limits - religion.

Comet defies death, brushes up to sun and lives (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A small comet survived what astronomers figured would be a sure death when it danced uncomfortably close to the broiling sun.

Comet Lovejoy, which was only discovered a couple of weeks ago, was supposed to melt Thursday night when it came close to where temperatures hit several million degrees. Astronomers had tracked 2,000 other sun-grazing comets make the same suicidal trip. None had ever survived.

But astronomers watching live with NASA telescopes first saw the sun's corona wiggle as Lovejoy went close to the sun. They were then shocked when a bright spot emerged on the sun's other side. Lovejoy lived.

"I was delighted when I saw it go into the sun and I was astounded when I saw something re-emerge," said U.S. Navy solar researcher Karl Battams.

Lovejoy didn't exactly come out of its hellish adventure unscathed. Only 10 percent of the comet ? which was probably millions of tons ? survived the encounter, said W. Dean Pesnell, project scientist for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which tracked Lovejoy's death-defying plunge.

And the comet lost something pretty important: its tail.

"It looks like the tail broke off and is stuck" in the sun's magnetic field, Pesnell said.

Comets circle the sun and sometimes get too close. Lovejoy came within 75,000 miles of the sun's surface, Battams said. For a small object often described as a dirty snowball comprised of ice and dust, that brush with the sun should have been fatal.

Astronomers say it probably didn't melt completely because the comet was larger than they thought.

The frozen comet was evaporating as it made the trip toward the sun, "just like you're sweating on a hot day," Pesnell said.

"It's like an ice cube going by a barbecue grill," he said.

Pesnell said the comet, although only discovered at the end of November by an Australian observer, probably is related to a comet that came by Earth on the way to the sun in 1106.

As Comet Lovejoy makes its big circle through the solar system, it will be another 800 or 900 years before it nears the sun again, astronomers say.

Norway marks Antarctic centenary

PM Jens Stoltenberg paid tribute to "one of the most outstanding achievements of mankind".

Dozens of scientists and explorers have joined the Norwegian prime minister to mark 100 years since Roald Amundsen led the first expedition to the south pole.

At the pole, PM Jens Stoltenberg paid tribute to "one of the most outstanding achievements of mankind".

But bad weather has obstructed several explorers who had hoped to reach the pole in time for Wednesday's events.

Homage is also being paid to Robert Scott, the UK explorer whom Amundsen beat to the pole.

Scott and four companions died on the return expedition after being caught in a blizzard.

Mr Stoltenberg unveiled an ice bust of Amundsen at the US scientific base station Amundsen Scott.

He said the commemorations aimed "to highlight the importance of this cold continent in our efforts to understand the warming of the globe", his office said in a statement.

He said Amundsen's polar expeditions "helped to form our new national identity".

Amundsen's arrival at the pole on 14 December 1911 came only six years after Norway had declared independence after a long union with Sweden.

Amundsen and his men - Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel and Oscar Wisting - had the same qualities "that the young nation wanted to be recognised by: courage, determination and endurance", the prime minister said.

"Scott and his team paid the ultimate price. But their names will forever be inscribed in polar history. They will always be remembered for their courage and determination in reaching one of the most inhospitable places on earth," Mr Stoltenberg added.

'Missing the party'

Icy winds and low visibility have hampered many explorers who had hoped to be welcomed by Mr Stoltenberg in time for Wednesday's centenary.

Norwegian Polar Institute director Jan-Gunnar Winther, who had attempted to reach the pole on skis, and Norwegian adventurer Asle Johansen, who had hoped to use the same equipment as Amundsen, both had to make the last stretch of their journey by plane to arrive in time, the Associated Press reported.

Fellow Norwegians Vegard Ulvang and Boerge Ousland were still hoping to make it, while British explorer Felicity Aston now expects to arrive a week late, AP said.

Only seven of 12 expeditions supported by the US-based Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions company currently en route to the pole were expected to arrive on time for the celebrations, it said.

"It's a bit of a shame because originally I was hoping to arrive by the 14th," Ms Aston told AP in an interview by satellite phone last week, "and I hear there's going to be a bit of a party, but unfortunately I'll still be out here skiing, so I'm going to miss the party."

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts) [Video]

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts) Facebook finally rolled out its much-anticipated Timeline feature today, which brings a snazzy new interface to your profile, not to mention the ability to see every post anyone's ever made back to their first day on Facebook. Here are the things you need to know about using it.

You can get the Timeline feature right now, but Facebook gives you seven days to adjust the look of your timeline before it goes public. Chances are, you'll want to tweak a few things before you publish it, so here are the things you'll want to look at during the next week before it goes live.

How to Browse the Timeline

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)When you first visit the new interface, you'll see that it is, in fact, a timeline of all your posts on Facebook, going from newest at the top to oldest at the bottom. By default, it shows all your posts from this month. If you scroll down to the bottom, it will automatically load all of your posts from last month. If you scroll to the bottom of that, it'll show the "highlights" from the rest of that year.

You'll also see on the right that you have a sidebar, from which you can jump to specific time periods. Click on a year and it'll jump to the Highlights view for that year, and expand the sidebar to show every month from that year. Click on a month, and it'll show you all the posts from that month. You can go to any time period you want, from now all the way back to your first day on Facebook.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)Also note that you can jump to a specific time period using the dropdown menus at the top of the page, if you don't like the sidebar tree. If at any point, you want to see all posts instead of just Facebook's Highlights, you can choose "All Posts" from the dropdown menu as well.

You might also want to check out the top of your profile, from which you can access a list of your friends, a new view of all your photos (which is actually pretty great), your Likes, and so on. You can also click the tiny "About" link under your profile picture to view your basic info, About Me, work and education, and so on.

How to Add New Events to Your Timeline

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)While you can add a status or photo to the top of your timeline as normal, the new view also allows you to add blocks on earlier sections of the timeline as well. Say you have a baby picture you want to upload to Facebook. You could go back to the year you were born and add it there, so it appears in chronological order, rather than putting it at the top. To do this, just find the desired spot on the timeline, and hover over the blue line in the middle. Your cursor will turn into a plus sign. You can then click there to add any kind of post you want, be it a new status, photo, place, or other life event (such as a change in relationship status, change in city, or others).

If you want to move a post that already exists?whether you posted it at the top or whether someone else posted an old picture of you?you can move it to a different spot on the timeline as well. Just hover over the post and click the pencil icon that shows up. Hit "Change Date" to move it anywhere you want on your timeline, and it'll show up there from now on.

How to Change the Look of Your Timeline

You'll notice that while the interface is very different, Facebook doesn't work all that differently from the way it used to. At the top of your timeline, you can add a new status update, photo, or place, and you can read all your wall posts just by scrolling down the timeline. The only new features you really need to learn about are those that directly relate to how your timeline looks.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)The first thing you'll want to check out is the cover. Essentially, you have two main photos on the front of your profile?one is your profile picture, which you should already see. The other is a "cover", a large, high-res photo that will appear behind your profile picture, and you can make this whatever you want. To add one, click the "Add a Cover" button on the right side or your profile. You can choose one of your existing photos or upload one from your hard drive. You can change your cover photo at any time just by hovering over it and clicking the "Change Cover" button that appears.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)The other new feature you'll want to try is starring a post. If there's a post you or someone else has made that you want to draw more attention to on your timeline, just hover over it and click the star button. This will make it wider, stretching across both columns of your timeline, to make it more noticeable. It'll also help break up the two-column view and keep the whole thing more interesting, which is nice. To delete a post or hide it from your timeline, click the pencil icon next to the star.

How to Make Old Posts More Private

The one big downside to the Timeline layout is that you can easily see every post you've ever made or received on Facebook. All anyone needs to do is go to a certain year on your profile and click the "All Posts" button. For a lot of us, that means posts you made when you were in high school?and I don't need to tell you how embarrassing it can be to look at some of the things you used to say in high school.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)You have a few choices here, and unfortunately neither is very ideal. You can go through your timeline and hide or delete individual posts by clicking the pencil icon, but depending on how long you've been on Facebook and how active you are, this could take forever.

Alternatively, if you have any old posts that are public or shared with friends of friends, you can change the privacy of all those posts to "Friends Only" with one click. It won't hide those posts from your friends, but it will at least keep everyone else on Facebook from being able to browse every post you've ever made public. Click the arrow next to the "Home" button in the upper right hand corner of Facebook. Head to Privacy Settings, then scroll down to "Limit the Audience for Past Posts". Click "Manage Past Post Visibility" and click the "Limit Old Posts" button. This will make all your past posts visible to Friends Only.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)Going forward, all posts you make will be subject to the same privacy settings you had before?so if it was set to Public, every post you make after hitting "Limit Old Posts" will still be public. Check out our guide to managing your Facebook privacy for more info.

Again, this feature isn't perfect, since those posts will still be visible to all your friends, but it's up to you how deeply you want to cultivate those old posts that everyone now has easy access to. Remember, though, you have 7 days before the Timeline goes public, so if you did want to dig in and go through every year, you could at least spread the work over a few days.

The new timeline feature is much more of a cosmetic update than a functional one, though it can be cool to go back and see all your old posts (as long as they aren't embarrassing), and being able to add posts anywhere on the timeline is a neat twist. If you haven't enabled it yet, head to Facebook's Timeline page to check it out, and let us know what you think of the new design in the comments.

HSBC China services PMI falls, slowdown spreads (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? The HSBC Purchasing Managers' Index for China's services sector fell to 52.5 from 54.1 in November, signalling its slowest rate of growth in three months and the latest in a series of data points portraying a quickly cooling economy in need of policy support.

"With price pressures easing further, Beijing can and should use policies that are targeted on small businesses and service sectors to keep GDP growth at above 8 percent for the coming year," Hongbin Qu, HSBC's chief China economist, said in a statement.

The fall in the HSBC gauge is sharp given that October's reading was 54.1 -- the strongest growth in four months -- though the index still remains above the 50 level that separates expansion from contraction in the sector.

China's official PMI for its non-manufacturing sector fell to 49.7 in November from 57.7 in October, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said on Saturday.

The readings mirror similar weakness in the country's giant manufacturing sector and underline expectations that Beijing will ease monetary policy further to cushion the blows of the global economy.

PMI data in the past week has shown that both domestic and export orders are weakening, helping explain the central bank's decision last week to cut reserve requirements for commercial lenders for the first time in three years.

The move to free up cash was a signal that the central bank was shifting toward loosening monetary policy to support the economy, which is widely expected to grow next year at less than 9 percent for the first time in a decade, economists said.

Some economists are reluctant to read too much significance into the services indexes given their volatility, lack of seasonal adjustments, simple calculation methodology and their consequently weaker predictive power.

For instance the reading of 49.7 in China's official November was an 8 point plunge from October, but smaller than the 9.5 point average since 2007, the starting point for this series, according to Tim Condon, head of Asian economic research at ING in Singapore.

Past performance suggests that half that decline will be recovered in December, leaving the index in the mid-50s, though that is well below the near-60 level it has been at for most of the last 18 months and a clear sign of a slowing economy.

"The weakness in the manufacturing sector is spreading to the non-manufacturing economy. We think the policy fine-tuning also will spread," ING's Condon said.
