How Do I Donate a Car in Savannah, Georgia? | Cars for Prostate ...

The great thing about Cars for Prostate Cancer?is you don?t have to answer our title question. ?All you need to know is that you CAN donate your car in Savannah; we?ll take care of everything. ?Contact us and it?s as good as done.

Donate a Car in Georgia

The majority of residents of Savannah self-identify their ethnicity as ?Black? or ?African-American?. ?In any discussion of Prostate Cancer, it is vital to know that, in the whole world, there is no group of men with a higher risk of death from Prostate Cancer than African-Americans.

It is not yet known why this population is more likely to get Prostate Cancer, but we do know why these men are more likely to die of it than any other group. ?The problem is lack of regular screening.

Prostate Cancer is subtle; its symptoms are easily ignored in the early stages as ?just another sign of aging?. Every man age 40 and older, 35 if there is family history, should be tested annually, just to be sure. ?Please encourage all?the men you care about to get on a schedule of PSA and DRE tests.

Your car donation, your boat donation, these tax-deductible gifts of caring people, enable us to get out the word to all ethnic groups that annual screening should be a normal part of their life.

Don?t live in Savannah? ?Doesn?t matter; We?re Everywhere. And, thanks to our donors, the future looks bright.

Donate a Boat

On the run, bin Laden lived in 5 houses

(AP) ? Osama bin Laden lived in five safe houses while on the run in Pakistan and fathered four children ? two of them born in government hospitals, his youngest widow has told investigators.

The details of bin Laden's life as a fugitive in Pakistan are contained in the interrogation report of Amal Ahmed Abdel-Fatah al-Sada, bin Laden's 30-year-old Yemeni widow. They appear to raise fresh questions over how bin Laden was able to remain undetected for so long in Pakistan after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, despite being the subject of a massive international manhunt.

Details from the report were first published by the Pakistani newspaper Dawn.

The Associated Press obtained a copy on Friday.

Al-Sada is currently in Pakistani custody, along with bin Laden's two other wives and several children. They were arrested after the U.S raid that killed bin Laden in May in his final hideout in the Pakistani army town of Abbottabad. The U.S. Navy SEALs shot her in the leg during the operation.

Mohammed Amir Khalil, a lawyer for the three widows, said the women would be formally charged for illegally staying in Pakistan on April 2. That charge carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.

Since the raid that killed bin Laden, it has been known that he lived mostly in Pakistan since 2002.

Al-Sada's account says she flew to Pakistan in 2000 and traveled to Afghanistan where she married bin Laden before the Sept. 11 attacks.

After that, the family "scattered" and she traveled to Karachi in Pakistan. She later met up with bin Laden in Peshawar and then moved to the Swat Valley, where they lived in two houses. They moved one more time before settling in Abbottabad in 2005.

According to the report, al-Sada said that two of her children were born in government hospitals, but that she stayed only "two or three hours" in the clinics on both occasions. The charge sheet against the three women says that they gave officials fake identities.

During the manhunt for bin Laden, most U.S. and Pakistani officials said that bin Laden was likely living somewhere along the remote Afghanistan-Pakistan border, possibly in a cave.

The fact he was living in populated parts of Pakistan raised suspicions elements in the Pakistani security forces may have been hiding him. U.S. officials have said they have found no evidence this was the case.

Designing Experiences, Systems and Solutions: Art Center's New ...

Nikolai Cornell MDP 04 with his Infiniti Interactive Mirrors.

With recent forecasts predicting that Apple will sell as many as 66 million units of their latest iteration of the iPad this year, its safe to say that what the Cupertino company dubbed as the ?post-PC era? is quickly becoming a reality. But the shift from personal computers to tablets is just one aspect of a digital interactive future still being written.

This coming Fall Term, as part of the College?s Create Change initiative, Art Center will launch a new undergraduate Interaction Design degree program, in which students?whether designing a mobile app or a gestural interface for an exhibition?will learn to think deeply about the user?s experience, apply technology creatively and invent new approaches to interaction and design.

We recently sat down with Interaction Design founding faculty members Brian Boyl (Graphic Design, Integrated Studies, Product Design), Philip van Allen (Graduate Media Design) and Jeffrey Higashi (Product Design), who have been busy establishing the framework for the Department?s curriculum in anticipation of the arrival of the new department?s chair. An international search is now underway and an announcement is expected in June.

Dotted Line: Can you describe the academic interaction design landscape and how Art Center?s new program will stand out?

Art Center faculty Brian Boyl. Photo: Steven A. Heller/Art Center College of Design.

Brian Boyl: There are several graduate programs in interaction design in the United States?Illinois Institute of Technology, New York Univeristy and Carnegie Mellon to name a few?but there aren?t a lot of accredited undergraduate programs. We?d be one of the first undergraduate programs to be launched and absolutely the first to be launched in Southern California. That?s exciting. What we?re doing is looking at the core strengths of Art Center. We think the best move in creating this program is to make sure it strongly integrates with our other departments and channels their strengths.

Phil van Allen: Interaction design is by its very nature collaborative, so the idea is to build a strong program that stands on its own but that also has a kind of permeability. For example, we?ve discussed that students in Interaction Design will take Graphic Design and Product Design courses, because those two disciplines are very central to interaction design. Our students will need to have an exceptional foundation of disciplines to be exceptional interaction designers. And then there?s the core of interaction design itself, which they will have to become experts in.

Dotted Line: Can you explain how strong product design affects an interface?

Faculty Jeff Higashi.

Jeff Higashi: It really helps you get to the details of creating usable interfaces. It gives you the ability to articulate the visual aspect of interfaces. That can be graphical, in terms of not only what?s on screen, but also the way the keys look or how interaction is broken up visually. It enables you to create instinctive types of interfaces?when you first see it, you immediately have a sense of how it?s supposed to work. It also enables you to bring efficient and accurate tactility to usable interfaces. Sometimes interfaces get very confusing?your cable company?s remote control with a billion keys is a good example. It?s not an efficiently designed solution; the keys are all the same size and made of the same material, meaning you need to turn the lights on to use it. It?s also not a very accurate tactile experience; you can very easily hit the wrong key. Paying attention to those details is one way Art Center?s Interaction Design department will stand apart from other programs.

Dotted Line: What kind of research have you been doing into the world of interaction design beyond the classroom?

Faculty Phil van Allen. Photo: Steven A. Heller/Art Center College of Design.

Faculty Phil van Allen. Photo: Steven A. Heller/Art Center College of Design.

PvA: The world of interaction design is at a really interesting moment right now. With the development of HTML5 there?s an opportunity to bring a whole new visual language to the Web. The Web has always been perceived as the poor stepchild of design because it?s so constrained. But now HTML5 allows designers to take a much more interesting approach. The things you can do now with type and image are much more interesting and dynamic. And the advance of technology in general is giving us the opportunity to create a whole new generation of interaction. In the established fields, there?s Web and mobile devices. And then there?s ubiquitous computing, which is an emerging area but one that offers tremendous opportunities for invention and intervention. One of the bigger opportunities is changing technology from a purely functional tool to something that integrates deeply into our lives in a pleasing and natural way.

JH: My research has mainly been in industry practice. I?ve been designing cell phones and mobile communications devices for more than 15 years. I?ve seen the change from tactile-only interfaces?yes, we had actual buttons for numbers!?to the introduction of colored LCD screens to the current touch screens. I started at Nokia in 1995 and during my time there we innovated a number of tactile interfaces?the scroll wheel for navigating lists is an early example. Then I went on create Samsung?s North American Wireless Design Center in 2000, where I worked on all mobile phones and accessories, including Bluetooth headsets. Bluetooth headsets are challenging because their operation is almost completely dependent on tactile feel. Getting the tactile interaction right is important to the overall performance of a product. As you can tell, I?m really geared towards the tactile side of interaction.

Dotted Line: Do you think a return to more tactile interfaces is a direction the industry is heading?

JH: I think it?s inevitable. We?ve got home appliances that are really getting into software-based control systems. The knee-jerk reaction would be to add a touch screen to everything. But imagine controlling your toaster with a touch screen. It?s likely to be overkill and, quite frankly, it?s expensive. Tactile interfaces can help establish a balance between advanced controls and intuitive experiences.

PvA: That?s actually where we see the Interaction Design program having its most immediate impact: in combining and bridging the screen with the tangible. An example I?ve been pointing to recently is the Nest Learning Thermostat. The Nest has been designed so that you simply turn the dial to adjust the temperature. It?s so very natural and simple to use. But underneath that simplicity it?s also responding to the user?it displays a little green leaf when they?re saving energy?as well as communicating with other Nests in the house as well as the Nest servers. And of course the user can modify the Nest?s settings on an iPhone or a web browser. So it?s really a whole system. That?s the future of interaction design.

Current Grad Media Design student Salvador Orara's Tonalis Luminous: light-sensitive flowers.

Dotted Line: What do interaction designers need to succeed in the real world?

BB: A lot of our research involved contacting more than 30 companies?Google, Frog Design, IDEO, Continuum Innovation, Karten Design?and asking them what niches exist out there that Art Center could fill. What we heard back?especially from companies like Johnson Controls and BMW DesignworksUSA, which create tactile interactions for the automobile industry?is that nobody is producing graduates with the type of interaction design experience they need. One executive told us that they put their new hires through two years of internal education just to get them to a point where they?re doing interaction design at a professional level. We also had a roundtable discussion with companies based in Los Angeles. And that was important for us?to ask what does L.A. offer in terms of interaction design ?that is unique and that we can build upon? We need to start answering that question. That means looking at the entertainment industry, the media industry, the transportation industry, product design, environmental design and health care. Those are areas that Art Center operates very well within.

JH: The ability to tell stories is huge. It a tool that really helps create a better experience. And that?s another way in which this new department will be well positioned?Art Center already has a strong focus on storytelling. In the Product Design Department our students ask: What is the need? What are the conditions of the environment that might affect the ability to use the product? And how do those things work together to deliver an experience that is relevant and also pleasurable? In software development there?s a process called the ?agile process,? in which programmers build the software interface, then they test it, then they rebuild it, they test it again. Through storytelling, we?re able to emulate that software development process. We?re able to tell a story of how we envision the user experiencing the product, and then we test it. And if it doesn?t work, then we rewrite the story and refine the interface in order to appropriately improve the user experience. In our classes, we continually rewrite and refine stories every week to make sure we?re incorporating realistic situations and addressing desirable needs.

An insulin monitoring system student project designed by Scott Schenone PROD 11.

DL: Doesn?t Art Center already have classes that incorporate elements of interaction design? I?m thinking particularly of Transportation Design, where so many cars now include computer interfaces?

BB: Yes, absolutely. In fact we?re running a class this term sponsored by Fujitsu Ten, a company that creates the computer systems for Toyota. We?ve worked with Fujitsu Ten for a few terms now and the course keeps evolving. Each time we learn more about what it means to have a digital interface in the car?what a designer can do with that in terms of navigation and media sensors and also what you shouldn?t do. Yes, we?re already in that space and we ?have many classes in interaction design , so this is a natural fit for us. We are leveraging off from what we already know and we we?re already involved in.

DL: Phil, I know that your NETLab Toolkit gives students the ability to integrate hardware, media and interactive behaviors into their projects. Doesn?t that also fit nicely into interaction design?

PVA: Yes, my graduate students in Grad Media Design are definitely already working in this area. For example, I teach a class called Productive Interaction, which is a good example of how interaction design can be approached differently. In that class, we focus on creating systems for people so that they can create their own meaning spaces. Rather than trying to impose a particular kind of experience, the designer creates a context for you to create your own experiences and meanings. [Editor's note: See the embedded video below for a Productive Interaction student project by current Graduate Media Design students Bora Shin, Mike Manalo and Link Hwang.] Working in that context, my students have done redesigns of Wikipedia and created new kinds of interactive publications. One student created the concept of a hand-held travel guide that?s flexible, foldable and can transform into different shapes. So when you?re walking down the street you can unfold it see it as a map, you can build your own itinerary as you walk around, or you can have it suggest things to you. I see three main parts of interaction design at the very core: designing the screen and physical behavior, which creates interesting and productive dialogs; designing the structure of the content so it?s communicative and useful; and designing the system in which the project exists because everything is networked together.

Art Center is now accepting applications for students entering the Interaction Design program in the 2012 Fall Term. For more information, call Admissions at 626.396.2373 or visit artcenter.edu/ixd

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Global warming is leading to such severe storms, droughts and heat waves that nations should prepare for an unprecedented onslaught of deadly and costly weather disasters, an international panel of climate scientists says in a report issued Wednesday.

The greatest danger from extreme weather is in highly populated, poor regions of the world, the report warns, but no corner of the globe ? from Mumbai to Miami ? is immune. The document by a Nobel Prize-winning panel of climate scientists forecasts stronger tropical cyclones and more frequent heat waves, deluges and droughts.

The 594-page report blames the scale of recent and future disasters on a combination of man-made climate change, population shifts and poverty.

In the past, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, founded in 1988 by the United Nations, has focused on the slow inexorable rise of temperatures and oceans as part of global warming. This report by the panel is the first to look at the less common but far more noticeable extreme weather changes, which recently have been costing on average about $80 billion a year in damage.

"We mostly experience weather and climate through the extreme," said Stanford University climate scientist Chris Field, who is one of the report's top editors. "That's where we have the losses. That's where we have the insurance payments. That's where things have the potential to fall apart.

"There are lots of places that are already marginal for one reason or another," Field said. But it's not just poor areas: "There is disaster risk almost everywhere."

The scientists say that some places, particularly parts of Mumbai in India, could become uninhabitable from floods, storms and rising seas. In 2005, over 24 hours nearly 3 feet of rain fell on the city, killing more than 1,000 people and causing massive damage. Roughly 2.7 million people live in areas at risk of flooding.

Other cities at lesser risk include Miami, Shanghai, Bangkok, China's Guangzhou, Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, Myanmar's Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) and India's Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta). The people of small island nations, such as the Maldives, may also need to abandon their homes because of rising seas and fierce storms.

"The decision about whether or not to move is achingly difficult and I think it's one that the world community will have to face with increasing frequency in the future," Field said in a telephone news conference Wednesday.

This report ? the summary of which was issued in November ? is unique because it emphasizes managing risks and how taking precautions can work, Field said. In fact, the panel's report uses the word "risk" 4,387 times.

Field pointed to storm-and-flood-prone Bangladesh, an impoverished country that has learned from its past disasters. In 1970, a Category 3 tropical cyclone named Bhola killed more than 300,000 people. In 2007, a stronger cyclone killed only 4,200 people. Despite the loss of life, the country is considered a success story because it was better prepared and invested in warning and disaster prevention, Field said.

A country that was not as prepared, Myanmar, was hit with a similar sized storm in 2008, which killed 138,000 people.

The study says forecasts that some tropical cyclones ? which includes hurricanes in the United States ? will be stronger because of global warming, but the number of storms should not increase and may drop slightly.

Some other specific changes in severe weather that the scientists said they had the most confidence in predicting include more heat waves and record hot temperatures worldwide, increased downpours in Alaska, Canada, northern and central Europe, East Africa and north Asia,

IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri told The Associated Press that while all countries are getting hurt by increased climate extremes, the overwhelming majority of deaths are happening in poorer less developed places. That, combined with the fact that richer countries are generating more greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels, makes the issue of weather extremes one of fairness.

However, extremes aren't always deadly. Sometimes, they are just strange.

Study co-author David Easterling of the National Climatic Data Center says this month's heat wave, while not deadly, fits the pattern of worsening extremes. The U.S. has set nearly 6,800 high temperature records in March. Last year, the United States set a record for billion-dollar weather disasters, though many were tornadoes, which can't be linked to global warming.

"When you start putting all these events together, the insurance claims, it's just amazing," Easterling said. "It's pretty hard to deny the fact that there's got to be some climate signal."

Northeastern University engineering and environment professor Auroop Ganguly, who didn't take part in writing the IPCC report, praised it and said the extreme weather it highlights "is one of the major and important types of what we would call 'global weirding.'" It's a phrase that some experts have been starting to use more to describe climate extremes.

What Is The Connection Between Sleep Apnea and Gout?

Sleep Apnea is characterized by repeated stops and starts of breathing during sleep. While there are several different types, Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most common and is a potentially serious disorder. The most common warning signal is snoring although not everyone who snores has SA.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea happens when the muscles in the back of the throat relax to the extent that they don't allow for normal breathing. This can narrow the airways and not allow for adequate breathing for 20 or 30 seconds. The lack of oxygen in the blood can drop so low, the brain will sense the inability to breathe and wake the person up; but usually not enough that they even remember.

Often times, those experiencing SA will snore loudly, be sleepy during the day, be startled awake with shortness of breath, have a hard time staying asleep, and frequent urination at night.

It is possible for anyone to develop SA, however, there are a few indicators that may signal increased risk:

  • Excess Weight or Obesity
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • More common in men
  • More common with middle age and older
  • The use of alcohol
  • Smoking

The greatest concern involving Sleep Apnea is Cardiovascular Problems.

Sudden drops in blood oxygen levels increase blood pressure and cardiovascular strain. Approximately 50% of people develop High Blood Pressure which increases the risk of Heart Attack and Stroke.

These individuals are prone to abnormal heart rhythms like Atrial Fibrillation. In the case of underlying Heart Disease, frequent and repeated bouts of low blood oxygen ? Hypoxia ? can cause sudden death from Heart Failure.

How do all these details about Sleep Apnea relate to Gout?

Although Gout is commonly dismissed due to "eating high-purine foods" and "drinking excessive amounts of alcohol", there is new research and studies being done. The dramatic increase in reported Gout Attacks has risen considerably in the last 10 years and has brought about a flood of new interest.

Testing of Sleep Apnea and the associated Hypoxia and Hypoxemia has shown that the condition leads to the generation of Uric Acid that is then fed into the blood. As the episodes progress through the night, the accumulation of Uric Acid becomes greater and greater, and becomes more than the kidneys can dispose of. In addition to this accumulation, the body develops a greater state of Acidosis in other ways and other areas as well.

Testing of Gout patients for Sleep Apnea is becoming more well-recognized and is slowly entering the mainstream. It is fast becoming accepted as an explanation of why Gout Attacks seem to develop more often during the sleeping hours.

Sleep Apnea is yet another interesting connection between Gout and Heart Disease, Diabetes, Obesity, Cancer, and many other illnesses and conditions.

The Ins and Outs of Home Based Business Opportunities | Home ...

House based organization opportunities are in every single nook and cranny the Web has to supply. From stuffing envelope programs to affiliate marketing and MLM where earning commissions off items is kind, launching a residence internet organization can involve as a lot or as little of these as you want. A typical Google search results page will introduce plenty of residence based business opportunities along with enough spam to fill 1000 inboxes. Keep in mind that not each property based business chance you see out there is legitimate. The create a home internet company industry is rife with fraud. Fortunately, these can be detected properly before a sign up occurs.

Real residence based organization operators usually carry a company address thats an actual place. Also, those presenting a top house base company to you will have a full fledged customer service staff behind them working enough hours all through the day to answer your calls. Searching by means of magazines or reputable online search entries on the business you are investigating ought to reveal press releases, news items, and other financial data that can aid you verify its legitimacy. Be careful: numerous of the top residence based businesses sunk inside a couple of months, so check for a long tenure as well. In 2005, there was a Ponzi scheme headed by a South Carolina woman who was later indicted for fraud. Her identity came into question, and her Ponzi scheme was revealed. The bottom line: a legitimate residence based enterprise often has a name, a face, an address, and records behind it.

After checking to see if your residence based enterprise chance is legit, check to see if the products they sell are worthwhile (if applicable.) In the real sense, you want your product to carry a long shelf live so that you have the chance to earn sales commissions over and over. Joining under affiliate pay per sale or pay per lead programs or launching a freelance writing company is far more consistent than obtaining paid for surveys. If youre going with a commission based program, understand how that property based organization firm will pay you and how it structures its payment plans. A very good residence based organization that deals with commissions generated by affiliate sign ups shouldnt need you into giving away signups to your up line, for instance. Pay per sale commission home based company programs continues to be 1 of the nicest approaches to make cash online.

In essence, your turnkey home based business ought to come equipped with a customer service staff that will answer your questions. Does your affiliate program have sponsors who are quickly reachable by phone or email? What about a support network and a community of fellow peers? Does your home organization chance packet come with informative training manuals? Whether or not youre joining or starting your own house based enterprise, the bottom line is that researching firms beforehand will get the job done. By studying how to filter the scams from the real, that secondary income (or initial if youre great enough) need to be hitting your bankroll real soon.

Supreme Court Limits Patents Based On Laws of Nature

New submitter sed quid in infernos writes "The Supreme Court issued a unanimous opinion yesterday holding that 'to transform an unpatentable law of nature into a patent-eligible application of such a law, a patent must do more than simply state the law of nature while adding the words "apply it."' The Court invalidated a patent on the process of adjusting medication dosage based on the levels of specific metabolites in the patient's blood. The opinion sets forth a process for determining patent eligibility for patent claims that include a law of nature. The court wrote that the "additional features" that show an application of the law must "provide practical assurance that the [claimed] process is more than a drafting effort." This language suggests that the burden will be on the patentee to prove that its limitations are more than patent attorney tricks.'"

5 Tucson foreclosure myths to Avoid

Beginning in 2007, foreclosures rocked the real estate world. Like an out-of-control freight train, they began decimating the market, peaking in 2009. Myths and rumors began propagating like mushrooms as consumers struggled to understand the new reality. Although many misconceptions have come and gone, we still encounter five myths on a regular basis.

?

1. There is going to be a flood of new foreclosures to the market.

This rumor has appeared every year since 2008 and has been routinely debunked. However, recent announcements that the Feds reached a settlement over the robo-signing scandal have reignited speculation. The idea is simple: Since the cork is now out of the foreclosure bottle, we?ll soon see another flood of REOs inundating the marketplace.

My personal opinion: don?t hold your breath.

Banks have learned that if they control inventory, they can affect local prices. By releasing homes in measured amounts, they realize higher prices than if they released a glut of homes. In addition, they?ve learned that if they can mitigate their losses by agreeing to a short sale, everyone wins.

2. You can go directly to a bank to buy a foreclosure.

Every few weeks I?m asked how to buy foreclosures direct from a bank. Someone knows a friend being foreclosed on and they want to step in and grab the house before it hits the market. Don?t we all? In reality, banks have a simple system ? they first offer properties on the courthouse steps. The rest they assign to asset mangers who then hire local real estate agents to put them on the market along with all the other homes. Want an REO? Pay cash at the courthouse steps or get in line witheveryone else when they hit the local MLS (Multiple Listing Service).

3. You can get a killer deal by submitting lowball offers on foreclosures.

You would think this myth would be dead by now. Unfortunately, like Elvis sightings, it just won?t go away. Here?s the truth: Banks want REOs sold in 30 days or less, so they typically appear on the market priced slightly under comparable properties. If the property doesn?t sell quickly, the bank will lower the price after about 30 days. Lowball offers are ignored and are, quite frankly, a waste of everyone?s time and effort. You might get a deal by offering a lower price on a foreclosure that?s been sitting on the market for more than 90 days, but remember that there are good reasons it?s gone unsold for so long. And even if you have cash, your lowball offer won?t be accepted ?seriously.

4. You can?t use foreclosures when doing an appraisal.

Or short sales, for that matter. That is no longer true. In fact, in many neighborhoods, that?s all that?s there. Therefore, foreclosed or distressed sales represent the actual value of homes in the area and HAVE to be used to appraise other properties. Don?t like it? Get over it. Times have changed and the ways neighborhoods are valued have changed as well.

5. Foreclosures are only affecting the bottom end of the market.

This used to be true. However, while foreclosure rates on the lower end of the market have actually decreased, they?re actually increasing on the upper end. According to Daren Blomquist, vice president of RealtyTrac, the market share of foreclosed homes under $1 million is shrinking, but those among properties valued over $1 million are rising ? up 115% since 2007. And foreclosures on properties valued upwards of $2 million have increased by 273%. While some well-known jet-setters have melted down and lost everything, others are choosing to strategically default. They see it like liquidating a poorly performing portfolio ? they have enough resources to cut their losses and move on. Historically, banks have been reticent to foreclose high-end homes and absorb a large loss, but defaulters are now forcing their hands and mansion foreclosure rates are moving on up.

Myths control behavior, and this has never been truer than in the housing market. Savvy agents will work hard to educate their clients, debunk myths, explain market trends, educate with solid facts ? and actually close transactions.

(AP) ? After declaring victories in getting federal and state officials to investigate the case of an unarmed black teenager shot to death by a neighborhood watch captain, civil rights leaders continued to pressure authorities to make an arrest.

At a town hall meeting Tuesday evening in Sanford, Fla., where the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin took place last month, officials from the NAACP, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Nation of Islam urged residents to remain calm but demand that the shooter, George Zimmerman, be arrested.

Zimmerman has not been charged in the Feb. 26 shooting and has said he shot Martin, who was returning to a gated community in the city after buying candy at a convenience store, in self-defense after Martin attacked him. Police said Zimmerman is white; his family says he is Hispanic.

"I stand here as a son, father, uncle who is tired of being scared for our boys," said Benjamin Jealous, national president of the NAACP. "I'm tired of telling our young men how they can't dress, where they can't go and how they can't behave."

The case has ignited a furor against the police department of this Orlando suburb of 53,500 people, prompting rallies and a protest in Gov. Rick Scott's office Tuesday. The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division said it is sending its community relations service this week to Sanford to "address tension in the community."

Earlier in the week, the federal agency opened a civil rights probe into the shooting, and in Florida, Seminole County State Attorney Norm Wolfinger said a grand jury will meet April 10 to consider evidence in the case.

"We are pleased the Department of Justice has heeded our calls and agreed to investigate this outrageous case," Jealous said in an emailed statement Tuesday. "The rules of justice in this nation have failed when an innocent teenage boy can be shot to death by a vigilante and no arrest is made for weeks."

At the town hall meeting, more than 350 people packed into the Allen Chapel AME Church. People jumped to their feet and cheered when local NAACP leader Turner Clayton Jr. said the federal Justice Department should not only review the investigation but also take over the Sanford Police Department.

Other civil rights leaders said the city's police chief should step down.

"This is just the beginning of what is taking place," Clayton said. "We're going to make sure justice prevails."

When The Associated Press tried to reach the police department Tuesday evening for comment, a dispatcher told a reporter to call in the morning.

Earlier Tuesday, an attorney for Martin's family revealed the teenager told his girlfriend just moments before he was killed that he was being followed.

"'Oh he's right behind me, he's right behind me again,'" 17-year-old Trayvon Martin told his girlfriend on his cellphone, attorney Benjamin Crump said.

The girl later heard Martin say, "Why are you following me?" Another man asked, "What are you doing around here?'" Crump said.

Crump told reporters Tuesday Martin cried out when a man bearing a 9mm handgun came at him. Police said Zimmerman, who was found bleeding from his nose and the back of his head, told authorities he yelled out for help before shooting Martin.

"She absolutely blows Zimmerman's absurd self-defense claim out of the water," Crump said of Martin's girlfriend, whose name was withheld.

Martin, who was in town from Miami to visit his father in Sanford, called his 16-year-old girlfriend in Miami several times on Feb. 26, including just before the shooting, Crump said. The discovery of the lengthy conversations, including one moments before the shooting, was made over the weekend by Martin's father, who checked his son's cell phone log, Crump said.

The teenager told the girl on his way back from the store he'd taken shelter from the rain briefly at an apartment building in his father's gated community, Crump said. Martin then told her he was being followed and would try to lose the person, Crump said.

"She says: 'Run.' He says, 'I'm not going to run, I'm just going to walk fast,'" Crump said, quoting the girl.

After Martin encountered Zimmerman, the girl thought she heard a scuffle "because his voice changes like something interrupted his speech," Crump said. The phone call ended before the girl heard gunshots.

The last call was at 7:12 p.m. Police arrived at 7:17 p.m. to find Martin lying face down on the ground.

Zimmerman was handcuffed after police arrived and taken into custody for questioning, but was released by police without being charged. Police have interviewed Zimmerman twice since then.

Crump called the treatment patently unfair and asked if Martin would have received the same treatment if he had been the shooter.

"We will not rest until he is arrested. The more time that passes, this is going to be swept under the rug," Crump said.

Crump said he plans to turn over information about the call to federal investigators; a grand jury in Seminole County is also likely to subpoena the records. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also involved in the state case.

Former federal prosecutors said there are limitations to a Justice Department civil rights probe, which typically would involve a sworn law enforcement officer accused of abusing his authority.

In this case, they said, it's not clear whether Zimmerman had any actual law enforcement authority or if the Sanford Police Department did anything improper. Zimmerman had a permit to carry a gun, but it was not required for his neighborhood watch patrol.

"I think the community has the feeling that there's some type of cover-up," said Jeffrey Sloman, former U.S. attorney in Miami. "At least the department's involvement makes sure it gets some review. He wasn't a police officer. I'm sure that this is going to be a tough case to prosecute."

Authorities may be hamstrung by a state "Stand Your Ground" law that allows people to defend themselves with deadly force and does not require a retreat in the face of danger. Asked Tuesday if that law needs change, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said "it's always positive to go back and think about existing laws."

During the town hall meeting in Sanford, Florida Rep. Geraldine Thompson promised the law's repeal would be a top priority for the state legislature's black caucus.

"If vigilante justice becomes the norm, will visitors feel comfortable coming to our state?" she said.

An online petition urging local authorities to prosecute Zimmerman had drawn more than 700,000 signatures at website Change.org as of early Wednesday. About 50 defense attorneys and protesters filled the lobby in the governor's office Tuesday to deliver a letter seeking an independent investigation and a task force to study racial profiling. They applauded when Scott came out of his office to talk to them.

"I will make sure justice prevails," Scott said. "I'm very comfortable that (state law enforcement) is going to do the right thing. They're not going to let somebody do something wrong and get away with it."
