Back to the iPad: What Apple should take from OS X Mountain Lion and give to iOS 6

Apple is clearly bringing the best parts of the iPad to the Mac, but how about bring iOS some of the best parts of OS X as well?

Yesterday Apple released the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion developers preview, and like OS X 10.7 Lion before it, front and center was a drive to take what worked best in iOS in general, and the iPad in specific back to the Mac. To make an Apple experience that's more consistent across their two platforms. But how about a little quid pro quo? There are several aspects of OS X, including some of what's being implemented in Mountain Lion, that I'd love to see in iOS 6.

PFT: Peyton's arm strength still in dispute

Cris Carterx-inset-communityAP

After getting voted down by the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee for the fifth consecutive year, Cris Carter says he thinks the voters oppose his position more than they oppose him.

Speaking to Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin on WQAM, Carter suggested that he, Andre Reed and Tim Brown have been the victims of voters who just don?t appreciate the talent of wide receivers.

?I just think it?s the wide receiver,? Carter said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. ?I think the modern-day wide receiver, I would say that his skill level is not appreciated. It?s not just about the numbers. It?s the ability to catch the football and put your talent on display.?

Carter may have a point. The receiver position lags behind quarterbacks, running backs, offensive linemen, defensive linemen, linebackers and defensive backs, with only seven receivers in Canton who started their careers after the 1970 AFL-NFL merger: Irvin, Steve Largent, James Lofton, Art Monk, Jerry Rice, John Stallworth and Lynn Swann. And only two of them, Largent and Rice, were selected in their first year of eligibility. Irvin and Lofton were each voted down twice before being selected, Monk and Stallworth were each voted down seven times and Swann was voted down 13 times before finally making it.

In Carter?s opinion, his own numbers compare favorably to Largent?s. Carter questioned why he has been voted down five times while Largent was elected to the Hall of Fame the first year he was eligible.

?If Steve Largent had 130 touchdowns he would have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer. But he didn?t, he had 100 ? and he was still a first-ballot Hall of Famer,? Carter said.

On that score Carter?s case isn?t quite as strong: It?s true that Carter?s raw numbers are better than Largent?s, but Carter played in a more passing-friendly offensive environment. When Largent retired he owned the all-time NFL records for catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Carter never owned any of those records.

Irvin said in his discussion with Carter that he hopes Carter joins him in Canton, and Carter said he has appreciated hearing that from many Hall of Famers, even if the Hall of Fame voters don?t feel the same way.

?When you all say something to me it really means a lot more,? Carter said. ?I can?t do no more. I appreciate what you guys are saying and doing and everything, but I pleaded my case those 16 years I played in the league.?

So far, the Hall of Fame voters haven?t thought that case was good enough.

Under fire, Obama adjusts his birth control policy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Under fierce election-year fire, President Barack Obama on Friday abruptly abandoned his stand that religious organizations must pay for birth control for workers, scrambling to end a furor raging from the Catholic Church to Congress to his re-election foes. He demanded that insurance companies step in to provide the coverage instead.

Obama's compromise means ultimately that women would still get birth control without having to pay for it, no matter where they work. The president insisted he had stuck by that driving principle even in switching his approach, and the White House vehemently rejected any characterization that Obama had retreated under pressure.

Yet there was no doubt that Obama had found himself in an untenable position. He needed to walk back fast and find another route to his goal.

The controversy over contraception and religious liberty was overshadowing his agenda, threatening to alienate key voters and giving ammunition to the Republicans running for his job. It was a mess that knocked the White House off its message and vision for a second term.

Leaders from opposite sides of the divisive debate said they supported the outcome ? or at least suggested they probably could live with it. Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan of New York, the head of the nation's Roman Catholic bishops and a fierce critic of the original rule covering hospitals and other employers, said the bishops were reserving judgment but that Obama's move was a good first step.

The bishops' organization later issued a far more skeptical critique contending that the new approach offered insufficient protections for religious employers and calling that unacceptable.

Republicans hoping to oust Obama from the White House were conceding nothing. Though not mentioning the birth control issue, Newt Gingrich assailed the president's views of religious rights and said "I frankly don't care what deal he tries to cut. ... If he wins re-election, he will wage war on the Catholic Church the morning after he's re-elected."

Mitt Romney, the front-runner in the campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, said the decision didn't change anything.

"Today he did the classic Obama retreat, all right, and what I mean by that is it wasn't a retreat at all. It's another deception," Romney said while campaigning in Portland, Maine.

Obama, acknowledging he wanted a resolution to the controversy, ordered advisers to find a middle ground in days, not within a year as had been the plan before the uproar. He said he spoke as a Christian who cherishes religious freedom and as a president unwilling to give up on free contraceptive care.

"I've been confident from the start that we could work out a sensible approach here, just as I promised," Obama said. "I understand some folks in Washington may want to treat this as another political wedge issue, but it shouldn't be. I certainly never saw it that way."

Under the new plan, religious employers such as charities, universities and hospitals will not have to offer contraception and will not have to refer their employees to places that provide it. If an employer opts out of the requirement, its insurance company must provide birth control for free in a separate arrangement with workers who want it.

"Very pleased," was how Sister Carol Keehan, president of the Catholic Health Association, reacted in a statement distributed by the White House. Her trade group represents Catholic hospitals that had fought against the birth control requirement, and Keehan said the new arrangement addresses the concerns it had.

In searching for a way out of the crisis, Obama also had to be mindful not to anger many women and fellow Democrats.

Planned Parenthood, a prominent women's health organization, said Obama had reaffirmed his commitment to birth control coverage. The group's president, Cecile Richards, added, though, that it would be monitoring for "rigorous, fair and consistent" enforcement so women get the promised coverage.

Before announcing his decision to reporters, Obama telephoned Keehan, Richards and Dolan.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, where Gingrich made his comments, many said the White House rewrite did not change anything.

"It's an accounting trick," said Mike Gonzales of the Heritage Foundation. "Do they think people are stupid?"

The debate within the White House was intense even before the Jan. 20 decision was announced to exempt only churches and other houses of worships from the requirement that employers must cover free contraception. Other religious organizations were given an extra year to comply, but that concession didn't do enough.

First in a rumble, and then in a roar, critics formed a movement to overturn what they considered to be an egregious violation. Bishops assailed the policy in Sunday Masses and Republican leaders in Congress pledged to push a legislative repeal.

The White House seemed to be caught flatfooted.

"The past three weeks have witnessed a remarkable unity of Americans from all religions, or none at all, worried about the erosion of religious freedom and government intrusion into issues of faith and morals," said Dolan, the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The turmoil, in turn, prompted advocates from other sides to get vocal in the battle for public opinion. They defended the rights of women and the need for preventive health care, including contraception, to be provided without fee for people of all faiths, no matter where they work.

Officials said Obama has the power under his health law to compel insurance companies to provide free contraception coverage directly to workers.

The health insurance industry voiced concern that putting the burden on them could set a precedent of shifting cost its way. The insurance companies will weigh in later as Obama's new policy undergoes review, said Robert Zirkelbach, spokesman for the America's Health Insurance Plans trade group.

Administration officials say providing birth control won't cost insurers any more in the long run, because it's less expensive than the costs of maternal care and delivery. But insurers say they'll have to pay drug companies for pills and doctors for prescriptions, so it won't be free to them. The costs probably will be passed on to policyholders, as is happening already with other requirements of the health care law, such as allowing young adults to stay under their parents' coverage until age 26.

By keeping free contraception for employers at religious workplaces ? but providing a different way to do it ? Obama was able to assert he had found "a solution that works for everyone." Unclear was why the White House had not come up with the idea in the first place.

While Obama in 2008 won the total Catholic vote, 54 percent to Sen. John McCain's 45 percent, he lost the white Catholic vote, 52 percent to 47 percent, according to exit polls. Once reliably Democratic, Catholics are now swing voters, with white Catholics making up the majority of the group.

The Rev. Joel C. Hunter, a moderate evangelical leader and a spiritual adviser to the president, said he thinks Obama responded quickly enough to heal the rifts with many of his religious allies. "I think it's simple enough that most people will say, `Oh good, we can get to other things now,'" said Hunter.

Yet the change just led to more criticism from some of Obama's opponents.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said that that initial response indicated church leaders were not yet convinced the mandate respected religious freedom. Boehner has said he believes the original measure violates First Amendment rights, and his office said Friday that he would seek legislation.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., an ardent support of the original measure, offered a restrained response. Focusing on the benefits of health care, she said: "I appreciate the president's unifying approach."

Rupert Murdoch's company settles 9 lawsuits

(AP) ? All but one of the first wave of phone hacking cases against Rupert Murdoch's News International have been settled, victims' lawyer told Britain's High Court on Wednesday.

The latest settlement bring to more than 60 the number of claims that Murdoch's UK newspaper company has dealt with.

Hugh Tomlinson, the lawyer for the victims, said six more lawsuits had been issued and that 50 other cases are in preparation.

Among the cases settled was that of comedian Steve Coogan, who was in court for the hearing.

The only outstanding cases left was brought by singer Charlotte Church, who has testified that Murdoch's reporters grossly violated her privacy and that of her family, causing great distress.

The judge ordered a short break before more details could be released.

The scandal over phone hacking at the News of the World tabloid boiled over after it emerged that journalists at the paper had routinely hacked into the phones of celebrities, politicians, sports figures and even crime victims.

The now-defunct tabloid has already settled with several prominent figures, including actress Sienna Miller and the family of murdered British schoolgirl Milly Dowler, whose phone was broken into by the paper soon after her disappearance in 2002.

New plan to cut the fat of the military (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Obese Americans in the military are a national security hazard and first lady Michelle Obama wants to see that change.

Obama, who has spearheaded a healthy eating and fitness program for children for two years, will lend her voice on Thursday to the military's efforts to overhaul the food it serves.

In an event in Little Rock, Arkansas, Obama will join top Pentagon officials to announce a new obesity and nutritional awareness campaign that will change nutrition standards across the services for the first time in 20 years.

The changes will bring more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and food choices that are lower in fat to 1,100 service member dining facilities in the coming months.

According to the White House, more than one quarter of 17- to 24-year-olds are too overweight to serve in the military. Active members of the military are also becoming more overweight, a Pentagon official said, and that causes a "readiness problem."

"The Department of Defense considers obesity not only a national problem but a national security issue," Assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Jonathan Woodson told reporters in a call to discuss the first lady's visit to Arkansas and other states to promote healthy eating.

"Our primary focus is on the health and well-being of service members, their families, and our retirees," Woodson said in remarks to be delivered in Little Rock. "Obesity is a preventable problem which, if combated, can help prevent disease and ease the burden on our overall Military Health System."

There is a lot of money involved. Woodson says the U.S. military spends about $4.65 billion in food services each year. It also spends an estimated $1.1 billion a year on medical care associated with excess weight and obesity.

In an effort to promote good choices, the military will redesign menus and try to supply healthier foods in mess halls and on bases and in vending machines and snack bars on military bases.

The first lady, who has been doing the rounds of television talk shows and late-night comedy shows to promote her "Let's Move" campaign to improve the nation's eating and exercise habits, said changes by the Pentagon would send an important message.

"Whenever our men and women in uniform step forward, Americans take notice. When our service members make healthy eating a priority in their lives, the rest of us are more likely to make it a priority in our lives," she said in remarks prepared for delivery at Little Rock Air Force Base.

"Simply put, this is America's entire military once again stepping forward to lead by example."

Donovan says Kentucky has champions' 'disposition' (AP)

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Florida coach Billy Donovan handicapped what could be the national title game in April.

The most intriguing matchup? Kentucky against Syracuse.

"If you're looking at talent, I think Kentucky has clearly six guys who are going to be first-round picks on their team. I don't know that Syracuse has six first-round draft picks, but they have really, really good talent and they have incredible length," said Donovan, who won national titles in 2006 and `07. "It would be a heck of a game."

After a 78-58 loss to the Wildcats on Tuesday night, the Gators have faced the top three teams in the poll ? Kentucky, Syracuse and Ohio State ? all on the road. Donovan's take is that Wildcats have the moxie to cut down the nets.

"The one thing I like about their team is I love their disposition on the floor," he said. "There's a certain disposition you have to have and I'm not talking about an arrogance or a cockiness, but there's like a focus level in terms of what really goes into winning at that level. There's a mentality there."

It's helped the Wildcats (24-1, 10-0 Southeastern Conference) win 16 in a row and keep coach John Calipari a perfect 48-0 at Rupp Arena since taking over in April 2009 with the Wildcats winning their last 49 home games.

"We have this little swagger," said freshman Anthony Davis, who had 16 points. "We just want to go out there and play hard and win. We're very capable of winning a national championship if we keep playing how we're playing."

Kentucky's goal from the start was to win an eighth national championship after losing to eventual champion Connecticut in the Final Four last year and the Wildcats reloaded with Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Marquis Teague. Add in sophomores Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb, senior Darius Miller and a fourth freshman, Kyle Wiltjer, and Kentucky is one of the country's youngest teams and also one of the most talented.

Kidd-Gilchrist scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Calipari said that the 18-year-old is similar to his brightest star at Memphis.

"He reminds me of Derrick Rose," Calipari said. "He's tougher on himself than I am on him. Like he came running over during the game and says to me, `Coach, I'm sorry.' I said, `Stop, just have fun and go play.'"

The Wildcats have the nation's top defense by field goal percentage to go along with a high-powered offense. Florida failed to hang around even in a half against this bunch in the Gators' first crack at them.

"It's fun winning by 20," Teague said. "We enjoy this. We want to go out and beat everybody by as much as possible."

One of the last remaining questions for a team that continues to believe it can play for a national championship in just under two months had been the quality of opponents the Wildcats had faced after not meeting a ranked team in over a month.

Kentucky answered it emphatically.

"We play together so well ? we enjoy playing together on offense and defense. We communicate. We just have fun out there," said Teague, who had 12 points and a career-best 10 assists. "It makes us play harder when you enjoy who you're playing with."

When Florida scored the first six points of the game, Kentucky answered with nine. When the Gators opened the second half with four straight points to cut the lead to 38-30, the Wildcats used an 11-0 run to all but end it.

"I think we made a big statement," Teague said. "We just wanted to come in and show that we can beat anyone and we can beat a team by a good amount."

The Wildcats still have a tough road remaining with games at Vanderbilt on Saturday, Mississippi State on Feb. 21 and a rematch with the Gators on March 4. Kentucky has beaten 13 of 24 opponents by 20 points or more and its only blemish is a one-point loss at Indiana in December on Christian Watford's 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Donovan said he'd like to see a Kentucky matchup with Syracuse.

"Syracuse to me is an interesting team. They have every bit as much length as Kentucky and they have more depth. They're an interesting team and obviously they play that zone," Donovan said. "I think when you get to the tournament, it's a one-shot deal and anything can happen in one game. But clearly, I think if they went all the way, it wouldn't be surprising."

Tibetan sets himself on fire in China (AP)

BEIJING ? Another Tibetan has set himself on fire in western China to protest government policies while thousands marched in another part of China to show support for their exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, a report said.

U.S.-funded Radio Free Asia said a man, apparently a monk, set himself on fire in Sichuan province's Aba prefecture on Wednesday and was taken away by soldiers and police. His condition was not immediately clear. It said the man shouted slogans before setting himself ablaze, citing a statement from Losang Yeshe and Kanyag Tsering, exiled Tibetan monks in India.

If confirmed, the incident would bring to at least 20 the number of monks, nuns and lay Tibetans who have set themselves on fire over the last year, mostly in traditionally Tibetan areas of Sichuan province. Most have chanted for Tibetan freedom and the return of the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama and his supporters of encouraging the immolations.

Radio Free Asia also said Tibetan protests erupted Wednesday in two counties in Qinghai province in northwest China, with about 1,000 people marching in each. Citing local sources and exiles with contacts in the region, it said security surrounded protesters but no violence occurred.

The broadcaster said protesters shouted slogans and carried banners calling for a "free Tibet," the release of all Tibetan political prisoners, and the return of the Dalai Lama.

A police officer reached Thursday by telephone in Nangqian, where one of the protests allegedly occurred, said he had no reports of any protests. Like many Chinese officials, he refused to give his name.

In recent protests in Sichuan, Tibetan activist groups said at least six Tibetans were killed when police fired on protesters. The Chinese government says two rioters died and 24 police and firefighters were injured when rock-wielding Tibetan separatists attacked police stations.

This has been the region's most violent period since 2008, when deadly rioting in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, spread to Tibetan areas in adjoining provinces. China responded then by flooding the area with troops and closing Tibetan regions entirely to foreigners for about a year.

Western media trying to visit areas where unrest has been reported in the last several weeks have been turned away by security forces.

Lobsang Sangay, the leader of Tibetans' self-declared exile government, said Wednesday that convoys of Chinese security forces have been seen moving toward Tibet in recent days, ahead of the Tibetan New Year on Feb. 22 and the March anniversary of the failed 1959 uprising.

"If the Chinese government think that the Tibet issue can be solved through violence, intimidation, then it's not going to happen, because the Tibetan spirit is strong," he said in Dharmsala, India.

China on Tuesday vowed to crack down on the unrest and accused overseas activist groups and the Dalai Lama of fomenting the violence.

"We believe that this is a case of a handful of criminals illegally gathering and smashing and looting," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in a routine briefing.

China says Tibet has been under its rule for centuries, but many Tibetans say the region was functionally independent for most of that time. The Dalai Lama has called greater autonomy for Tibet and denies Beijing's claims that he is a separatist.

Facebook Not the First or Only Business to Exploit Users (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | It doesn't matter if an internet company goes public, like Facebook's big IPO announcement. Users are exploited to advertisers. This is the way of the business world. Ad dollars makes the world go around. Using or selling user information to businesses isn't anything new; it's been going on long before Facebook.

Don't believe me? Read through any of the terms of service on any website you signed up for. You will find they say they won't sell your information, but they are using what information you provide against you in the advertising world.

Big business buy ad placement on websites just like they do for TV commercial spots. The more they pay; the better spots they get on any given website. The same goes for radio spots.

It doesn't matter if you're listening, socializing or watching online, advertisers pay the bills for free sites like Facebook and even with search engines like Google. Commercial spots, whether video, text blocks, or banners, you get inundated by manufacturers and sales companies.

There's no getting around it, folks. Driving down the interstate, you find billboard ads. Open a newspaper, you find small, medium, and full-page ads; same for magazines. You even see it in any retail store you walk in to.

Don't like it? Stay home in bed under the covers. Don't turn on any electronic device. Don't buy a magazine or newspaper.

You can't even get into a cab or on a bus without some form of advertising staring you down. Don't make a big deal out of Facebook pimping you to advertisers to earn monies on the back side of the program. Don't be mad because investors are going to see a return on their stocks because of being pimped out to the masses of advertisers.

Still don't like it? Close your account. Disconnect your Internet service. Move on to things that don't require you to share anything about yourself. Just don't complain about the rising costs of goods because you want to prove a point.

No matter how well Facebook's IPO does upon release and in the future, the world will still revolve, advertisers will advertise, and life will go on. You will be exploited in one way or another.

Co-Worker Support Reduces Workplace Stress, Ups Productivity ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor

Co-Worker Support Reduces Workplace Stress, Ups Productivity The demand to improve productivity has created a workplace environment of intense competition and increased stress for many. Paradoxically, these conditions often stymie organizational efforts to become more efficient and effective.

A new study offers a novel way to improve worker productivity ? training direct supervisors to provide emotional and social support. While it may seem a common-sense notion, many employers do not train supervisors on the necessity of support or on techniques to provide assistance.

As an example, a worker might develop somatic symptoms, such as stomach aches, a headache or muscle tension from workplace stress. The symptoms may cause the individual to call in sick or even take a leave of absence.

However, when the individual?s supervisor offers emotional and social support, the employee may recover without needing to take that extra afternoon or day off.

This is the finding of a new study from the University of Haifa, soon to be published in the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology.

In earlier studies, scholars have shown stress at the workplace (due to high job demands and low control) can cause workers to develop psychological strain that translates into physiological symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches and fatigue.

The symptoms and ill effects are often relieved when individuals take time away from work to recover. Experts report that approximately $225.8 billion per year is lost in the U.S. alone due to absenteeism.

The study, lead by Dr. Michal Biron of the University of Haifa, examined interpersonal workplace dynamics and their influence on burnout. Biron also investigated if the workplace environment influenced the individual?s decision to take sick leave to recover.

The study was conducted in a manufacturing enterprise in China and examined a sample group of 241 workers.

In Chinese culture, there is significant distance between supervisor and employee, making it a particularly relevant context to examine the role of supervisor support relating to absenteeism.

The workers were asked to report on common somatic symptoms, such as headaches or muscle soreness, that they experienced over the past month and to indicate how often their supervisor provided them with emotional and instrumental support once they experienced physical symptoms of stress.

Data on sickness absence was provided by the employer.

The results showed that support from a supervisor when an employee is experiencing psychosomatic symptoms of the stress can make a real difference.

When the boss offers support in the form of, for example, a lightened work load or stress management training, it is more likely to keep the worker from taking sick leave. This is because the worker feels more inclined to reciprocate the supportive treatment by keeping their work effort high.

?The worker who is given this sort of support is more likely to overcome the somatic stress and continue to work productively, leaving recovery for the normal after-work hours when we recharge our batteries,? said Biron.

However, investigators realized that a worker might stay at work out of fear for their position. But the study suggests such a worker is also less likely to be able to shake off the symptoms and will in due course need more sickness absence.

Researchers determined that co-worker support early on, when the employee begins to experience workday stress, plays a role in reducing the physical effects of stress, thereby reducing the likelihood of even developing the need for sickness absence.

?We see from this study that employers can provide concrete support for employees experiencing somatic stress symptoms, but can also encourage co-workers to support one another in the first place and minimize the effects triggered by their workload,??Biron said.

?With the enormous economic losses due to absenteeism and with this still being a poorly understood phenomenon, the results of this new study are shedding light on those factors influencing sickness absence and which can be considered in the effort to reduce the losses without compromising work ethic and commitment.?

Transplant jaw made by 3D printer

A 3D printer-created lower jaw has been fitted to an 83-year-old woman's face in what doctors say is the first operation of its kind.

The transplant was carried out in June in the Netherlands, but is only now being publicised.

The implant was made out of titanium powder - heated and fused together by a laser, one layer at a time.

Technicians say the operation's success paves the way for the use of more 3D-printed patient-specific parts.

The surgery follows research carried out at the Biomedical Research Institute at Hasselt University in Belgium, and the implant was built by LayerWise - a specialised metal-parts manufacturer based in the same country.

Articulated joints

The patient involved had developed a chronic bone infection. Doctors believed reconstructive surgery would have been risky because of her age and so opted for the new technology.

The implant is a complex part - involving articulated joints, cavities to promote muscle attachment and grooves to direct the regrowth of nerves and veins.

However, once designed, it only took a few hours to print.

A 3D printer was used to make the synthetic jawbone - Courtesy of LayerWise

"Once we received the 3D digital design, the part was split up automatically into 2D layers and then we sent those cross sections to the printing machine," Ruben Wauthle, LayerWise's medical applications engineer, told the BBC.

"It used a laser beam to melt successive thin layers of titanium powder together to build the part.

"This was repeated with each cross section melted to the previous layer. It took 33 layers to build 1mm of height, so you can imagine there were many thousand layers necessary to build this jawbone."

Once completed, the part was given a bioceramic coating. The team said the operation to attach it to the woman's face took four hours, a fifth of the time required for traditional reconstructive surgery.

"Shortly after waking up from the anaesthetics the patient spoke a few words, and the day after the patient was able to swallow again," said Dr Jules Poukens from Hasselt University, who led the surgical team.

The surgery time decreases because the implants perfectly fit the patients?

End Quote Ruben Wauthle LayerWise

"The new treatment is a world premiere because it concerns the first patient-specific implant in replacement of the entire lower jaw."

Screw-in teeth

The woman was able to go home after four days.

Her new jaw weighs 107g, just over a third heavier than before, but the doctors said that she should find it easy to get used to the extra weight.

Follow-up surgery is scheduled later this month when the team will remove healing implants inserted into holes built into the implant's surface.

A specially made dental bridge will then be attached to the part, following which false teeth will be screwed into the holes to provide a set of dentures.

Printed organs

The team said that it expected similar techniques to become more common over the coming years.

"The advantages are that the surgery time decreases because the implants perfectly fit the patients and hospitalisation time also lowers - all reducing medical costs," said Mr Wauthle.

"You can build parts that you can't create using any other technique. For example you can print porous titanium structures which allow bone in-growth and allow a better fixation of the implant, giving it a longer lifetime."

The research follows a separate project at Washington State University last year in which engineers demonstrated how 3D-printer-created ceramic scaffolds could be used to promote the growth of new bone tissue.

They said experiments on animals suggested the technique could be used in humans within the next couple of decades.

LayerWise believes the two projects only hint at the scope of the potential medical uses for 3D printing.

Mr Wauthle said that the ultimate goal was to print body organs ready for transplant, but cautioned that such advances might be beyond their lifetimes.

"There are still big biological and chemical issues to be solved," he said.

"At the moment we use metal powder for printing. To print organic tissue and bone you would need organic material as your 'ink'. Technically it could be possible - but there is still a long way to go before we're there."

'Chronicle' edges Radcliffe's 'Woman' with $22M (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Some unknown kids with superpowers have nudged out the world's most famous teen wizard at the weekend box office.

The 20th Century Fox release "Chronicle," featuring a relatively unknown cast as youths who gain telekinetic abilities, debuted as the No. 1 movie with $22 million.

Sunday studio estimates put "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe's ghost story "The Woman in Black," released by CBS Films, just behind with a $21 million opening.

The results were close enough that the No. 1 and 2 rankings could switch when final numbers are released Monday.

The two movies had healthy starts considering it was Super Bowl weekend, when few people go to theaters on Sunday because of the big game.

Each movie landed in the all-time top-10 list for Super Bowl weekend debuts, which is headed by the $31.1 million opening for 2008's "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert," according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"To have two movies over $20 million on a Super Bowl weekend is really strong," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "If the Super Bowl is as close as these two movies, that'll be a really good Super Bowl."

Both movies packed in solid teen and early-20s crowds, Hollywood's bread-and-butter audience that had been giving movies a pass during a box-office slide late last year.

"Chronicle" was "designed and made for a younger demographic. That demographic has been the one that's been missing from theaters," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for 20th Century Fox. "There's something very unique and very innovative about this movie that they got wind of. There was a lot of pre-release chatter on social media that made a connection with this audience."

From first-time director Josh Trank, "Chronicle" relies on documentary-style, hand-held filming techniques to tell the story of three teens (Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan and Alex Russell) who put their newfound superpowers to work in mischievous and eventually dark ways.

In "The Woman in Black," his first starring role since last summer's "Harry Potter" finale, Radcliffe plays a widowed lawyer beset by ghostly apparitions at the remote home of a recently deceased client.

While the audience for "Chronicle" was 55 percent male, the crowds for "Woman in Black" were 59 percent female, drawn by heartthrob Radcliffe and the lure of an old-fashioned Gothic ghost story.

Both films far exceeded industry expectations for the weekend.

"In retrospect, you look at Daniel Radcliffe, one of the biggest stars and one of the hardest-working kids in show business, you have a very well-made PG-13 scary movie," said Steven Friedlander, head of distribution for CBS Films. "The only surprise, really, is why are we surprised? Those are all the elements for making a hit."

The previous weekend's top movie, Liam Neeson's Alaska survival tale "The Grey," slipped to No. 3 with $9.5 million, raising its domestic total to $34.6 million.

At No. 4 with an $8.5 million debut was another Alaska adventure, Universal Pictures' family film "Big Miracle," with Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski aiming to save three whales trapped by Arctic ice.

Pop star Madonna's drama "W.E." had a modest opening in limited release, pulling in $45,000 in four theaters. Directed and co-written by Madonna, "W.E." blends the real-life romance of Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and Britain's King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) with a fictional modern story of a Manhattan woman (Abbie Cornish) in an unhappy marriage.

Hollywood finished the first month of 2012 with strong revenues that are running well ahead of last year's lackluster receipts. According to Hollywood.com, domestic revenues through Sunday totaled $967.5 million, up 14 percent from the same point last year.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Chronicle," $22 million.

2. "The Woman in Black," $21 million.

3. "The Grey," $9.5 million.

4. "Big Miracle," $8.5 million.

5. "Underworld Awakening," $5.6 million.

6. "One for the Money," $5.3 million.

7. "Red Tails," $5 million.

8. "The Descendants," $4.6 million.

9. "Man on a Ledge," $4.5 million.

10. "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," $3.9 million.

Police clear tents from Occupy site in DC; 7 held (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Dozens of U.S. Park Police officers in riot gear and on horseback converged before dawn Saturday on one of the nation's last remaining Occupy sites, with police clearing away tents they said were banned under park rules.

At least seven people were arrested. Officials said it was relatively peaceful but got tense late in the day when an officer was struck in the face with a brick as police pushed protesters out of the last section of the park. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Protesters held a general assembly Saturday evening and vowed to continue the movement. One of the speakers acknowledged the injured officer and urged everyone to practice nonviolence.

Police insisted they were not evicting the protesters. Those whose tents conformed to regulations were allowed to stay, and protesters can stay 24 hours a day as long as they don't camp there with blankets or other bedding. Police threatened to seize tents that broke the rules and arrest the owners.

The police used barricades to cordon off sections of McPherson Square, a park under federal jurisdiction near the White House, and checked tents for mattresses and sleeping bags and sifted through piles of garbage and other belongings. Some wore yellow biohazard suits to guard against diseases identified at the site in recent weeks. Officials also have raised concerns about a rat infestation.

Eventually most of the protesters had been pushed into the surrounding streets, which were closed to traffic.

By Saturday afternoon, seven were arrested, including four who refused to move from beneath a statue and three who crossed a police line.

Despite what police said, some protesters said the crackdown amounted to eviction.

"This is a slow, media-friendly eviction," protester Melissa Byrne said. "We're on federal property, so they have to make it look good."

The officers poured into McPherson Square just before 6 a.m., some on horseback and others wearing routine riot gear. As a helicopter hovered overhead, they shut down surrounding streets and formed neat, uniform lines inside the park.

The police initially turned their focus to dragging out wood, metal and other items stored beneath a massive blue tarp ? which protesters call the "Tent of Dreams" ? that had been draped around a statue of Maj. Gen. James McPherson, a Union general in the Civil War. Protesters agreed to remove the tent.

Later, in a lighter moment, Park Police used a cherry-picker to remove a mask of 17th-century English revolutionary Guy Fawkes that had been placed on the statue.

Jeff Light, a lawyer who represents a couple of Occupy protesters and who was at McPherson Square, said he expected to challenge the police actions in court. He said he was frustrated because a lawyer for the government had said there were no plans to seize tents that complied with the regulations.

"Here they are," Light said, "doing something different than what they said in court."

The Washington demonstration is among the last remaining Occupy sites, enjoying First Amendment protections by virtue of its location on federal park service property.

Similar to the New York protesters, who strategically occupied a park near Wall Street to highlight their campaign against economic inequalities, the District of Columbia group selected a space along Washington's K Street. The street is home to some of the nation's most powerful lobbying firms.

If you experience hearing a ringing in your ears, swishing sounds, or other noises that seem to be coming from your ears, you probably have tinnitus. It seldom signifies a major health problem, but obtaining a tinnitus treatment is essential for any person who has to contend with the issue. There are numerous factors that can lead to tinnitus, and most often the problem begins when nerve endings in the ear are somehow damaged.

The very first thing you?ll want to do is speak to your doctor. A doctor or health care professional will help you uncover a treatment method that will be safe and work for you. Have a comprehensive physical exam to ensure that additional issues with your ears or head may be ruled out. When you?re sure it really is tinnitus, your doctor will help you manage it. There is no cure for tinnitus. Oftentimes, it resolves itself and just disappears altogether. For that reason, your doctor could advise you to just live with it.

There are drugs and medications that have been tested as potential tinnitus treatment options. Certain ear specialists advise that individuals who are suffering from this problem use niacin. However, if you use niacin, there might be side effects to cope with such as skin flushing. Talk to your doctor or an otolaryngologist about the option.

Talk about whether or not you need to try other medications, including gabapentin. In high doses, gabapentin can decrease the annoyance of tinnitus in patients who suffer from it. Nevertheless, it does not make the noise go away. A drug called acamprosate, that is used to treat alcoholism, has additionally performed very well in tests. Though this drug isn?t legal to use in the United states at this point, your doctor might have some insight as to whether or not it might work for you.

Other treatment options your doctor could suggest can include reducing the amount of caffeine you consume as well as controlling your sodium intake. If you are a smoker, consider quitting and it may reduce the symptoms of the tinnitus. You may have lower amounts of zinc in your system in comparison with people who do not hear a ringing noise in their ears, so consider taking a zinc supplement. Herbal remedies such as ginkgo biloba are also useful for a few individuals.

Get started with your tinnitus treatment by speaking to your doctor. If you and your doctor determine prescription drugs and medications are not going to work for you, make use of other remedies to minimize your symptoms. With a little luck, the problem will ultimately go away by itself. If it gets to be intolerable, speak to a specialist about additional health issues that could be contributing to the noise issue in your ears.
