Ukraine stays extradition of Putin murder plot suspect

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine has suspended the extradition to Russia of a suspect in a foiled plot to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin, after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) said it would review the case, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

A Ukrainian court this month ruled that Adam Osmayev should be extradited to Russia but he challenged the ruling in the Strasbourg-based court. He has denied plotting to blow up Putin.

"Ukraine has suspended Adam Osmayev's extradition. The Prosecutor General's office on August 17 received a ruling by the ECHR informing it that the court was reviewing Osmayev's appeal against the extradition," Interfax news agency quoted a foreign ministry spokesman as saying.

The court's press service confirmed that it had notified the Ukrainian authorities of the appeal and recommended, in line with standard practice, that the extradition be suspended pending its review.

Shortly before Russia's March 4 presidential election, Ukrainian state media reported a plot by Islamist rebels to kill Putin, who then served as prime minister and returned to the Kremlin for a third term as president after the vote.

Russian state television said the plotters, seized after one blew himself up in a flat in the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odessa, had planned to plant a bomb in central Moscow to kill Putin on his way to work.

Putin's opponents dismissed the report as a crude attempt to boost the former KGB spy's popularity.

U.S. President Barack Obama warned on Monday the regime of President Bashar Assad ? and ?other players on the ground? ? that the use or movement of chemical weapons would be a ?red line? for the United States.

President Obama said U.S. thinking on possible military involvement in Syria would change if chemical or biological weapons came into play in the Syrian civil war.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Obama said the use of such weapons of mass destruction, which Syria has, would widen the conflict considerably.

?It doesn?t just include Syria. It would concern allies in the region, including Israel, and it would concern us,? Obama said.

On July 27, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was ?deeply? concerned about reports of the possible use of chemical weapons by Syria, and demanded the government pledge it would not use them ?under any circumstances.?

?I remain deeply concerned about the reports of the possible use of chemical weapons,? he told reporters, citing one report in which Syria said it would use such weapons if it was attacked by foreign powers.

Russia said it received assurances from Syria that chemical weapons are secure. ?We have received firm assurances from Damascus that the security of these arsenals is fully ensured,? Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said in an interview with the ITAR-TASS news agency on July 25.

Gatilov stressed that Syria as a signatory of the Geneva protocol banning the use of chemical weapons ?had taken on itself concrete obligations to renounce such methods of warfare.?

?We consider that Syria must fulfill its obligations,? he said.

Western countries and Israel have voiced fears that chemical weapons could fall into the hands of militant groups as the authority of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad erodes.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has said Israel would consider military action, if needed, to ensure those weapons did not reach Assad?s Hezbollah guerrilla allies in Lebanon. Israel says Hezbollah, a bitter enemy, has some 70,000 rockets in its arsenal.

Speaking at Muster headquarters in Mary St, Gympie, yesterday, Gympie Muster Ltd CEO James Dein said the whole event is set up to be the friendliest, most tolerant and safest Muster ever, from both a security and medical point of view.

And carers doing their jobs will be welcome, with free admission, he said.

"We're aiming to really look after our campers this year, particularly for first-timers.

"We've got campsite spotters to help people find a site, without too much confusion - and that's a first.

"Camping marshals will act as community watch people to help everyone feel safe and to help people, particularly first timers, to get set up and enjoy the sense of community which is an important characteristic of the Muster.

"It's a community that comes together on the site each year.

"We're making every effort to help seniors, and those who are disabled and we have a special free admission deal for carers, for the first time.

"Carers accompanying the person they care for will be given free admission to the site and we will look after them.

"The old sound shell has been converted into a wheel chair accessible site, a prime viewing and listening site.

"This is so people needing wheel chair access can have the benefit of a prime, flat, secure area for disabled people to enjoy the event.

"The kid's club is back this year, with again a large secure and safe play area, supervised by professional blue card holders.

"This will allow mums and dads to enjoy the Muster and keep their children entertained at the same time.

"Security has been increased in the licensed area to ensure we keep and exceed all our obligations as far as responsible service of alcohol is concerned.

"Our people are working very closely with the authorities and we are doing that specifically to make people not only safe, but to make sure people feel safe.

"We want to relieve any anxiety people may sometimes feel about crowds and safety issues.

"This will back up the genuinely harmonious feel of the event, because there is a real harmony with community groups and the various agencies, all working together as a team to make the Muster thoroughly enjoyable.

"We've got four-year-olds up to 90-year-olds and we're confident we can give everyone a great experience," he said.

Keeping progress in perspective ? a message to Prof. Alan Ashworth

With the publication of data about enzalutamide in the New England Journal of Medicine last week, Professor Alan Ashworth, the head of the Institute for Cancer Research (ICR) in the UK, proclaimed ?a golden age in prostate cancer drug discovery.?

Prof. Ashworth?s enthusiasm is certainly understandable. No one is going to disagree with him that great progress has been made in the potential to treat progressive forms of prostate cancer in the past few years:

• In April 2010, sipuleucel-T became the first form of personalized immunotherapy ever to extend overall survival in cancer (for men with asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic CRPC ? metastatic or non-metastatic).
• Cabazitaxel ? a taxane-based chemotherapeutic agent ? used in combination with prednisone was approved (in June 2010) to extend overall survival in men with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) progressing after docetaxel-based chemotherapy.
• Abiraterone acetate + prednisone initially showed an overall survival benefit in men with mCRPC after docetaxel-based chemotherapy (and was approved for that use in April 2011) and ? more recently ? has shown a progression-free survival benefit in chemotherapy-naive men with asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic mCRPC.
• Radium-223 is the first injectable form of radiation therapy to demonstrate an overall survival benefit in any form of cancer (specifically in men with mCRPC who had or had not received prior chemotherapy).
• Enzalutamide (formerly known as MDV3100) has demonstrated an overall survival benefit in men with mCRPC after docetaxel-based chemotherapy and is still expected to demonstrate an overall survival benefit in chemotherapy-naive men with asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic mCRPC.

However, among these five new agents, the longest median overall survival benefit is still ?only? 4.8 months (demonstrated by men in the enzalutamide trial). In that trial, the median age of the 800 men randomized to receive active drug was 69 years (range 41 to 92 years). Thus, the average extension of life of these patients was actually

4.8/(69 x 12) x 100 = 0.58 percent

The way that The ?New? Prostate Cancer InfoLink looks at the progress made over the past 5 years or so is not so much as ?a golden age? in prostate cancer drug discovery as it is a platform for real hope that such a golden age may be coming.

For us, that ?golden age? will only begin when new forms of therapy start to show a median survival benefit that extends life by at least a year in men with mCRPC. In the enzalutamide trial mentioned above, a median overall survival benefit of a single year would have equated to a 1.45 percent extension in the overall life of the men on active drug. However, very few forms of cancer therapy have ever demonstrated a median overall survival benefit of a year for people with advanced, metastatic disease, so this would be a really meaningful change in the opportunity available to patients ? especially if that benefit was shown by a form of therapy that had the potential to be used much earlier in the progression of the disease (and therefore to induce a far greater survival in less sick and much younger patients).

At present, we know of just one agent in advanced clinical trials that might even begin to approach this type of overall survival benefit ? the immunotherapeutic agent Prostvac VF, which, in a randomized Phase II clinical trial, showed an overall survival benefit of 8.2 months. However, overall survival was not the primary endpoint of the trial in question, and so this result needs to be treated with great caution.

Of course the true ?golden age? for research into treatment of prostate cancer will only begin if we can start to find ways to absolutely stop progressive prostate cancer in its tracks, without most of the side effects historically associated with things like surgery and radiation therapy. However, when? we consider the progress made over the past 5 to 10 years, even that golden age may be closer than we could possibly have believed just 20 years ago.

Romney slams US lawmaker's rape comments

US presidential challenger Mitt Romney on Monday firmly dismissed a fellow Republican candidate's shock claim that women rarely become pregnant in cases of "legitimate rape."

Todd Akin, a congressman from Missouri and his party's nominee for the Senate, triggered outrage on Sunday when he asserted in a television interview that a woman's body can spontaneously block an unwanted pregnancy.

This claim, which is unsupported by science, has been used in the past by some US Christian conservatives to justify their opposition to all abortions, even those sought by women who have been raped.

But the remark embarrassed Romney, who is running against President Barack Obama in November's election and has been trying to broaden his party's appeal among women and independent centrist voters.

"Congressman's Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong," Romney told the conservative website National Review Online. "Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive."

In his comments, Akin had appeared to suggest that some women falsely allege rape in order to justify abortions, saying: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Romney dismissed this, saying: "I have an entirely different view. What he said is entirely without merit and he should correct it."

Despite his anger over Akin's outburst -- and despite previously supporting abortion rights as governor of Massachusetts -- Romney is campaigning for the White House on an anti-abortion ticket.

His campaign calls on the US Supreme Court, whose members are appointed by the president, to overturn the 1973 "Roe versus Wade" ruling that women seeking abortions have a right to privacy.

The effect of overturning the ruling would allow individual US states to determine their own abortion laws, and many of them would be expected to ban or to restrict the practice.
