When the day ended, Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano turned off the light and left.
The simple gesture, something that perhaps he did without thought each day he left months ago, signified things actually going back to somewhat normal for Pagano. Pagano had just finished his first day back at work since being diagnosed with leukemia in September.
That light in his office stayed on the entire time he was gone. Interim coach Bruce Arians wouldn?t allow anyone to turn it off, and he wouldn?t take over Pagano?s office. Pagano would do that when he returned, not if he returned.
And when Pagano finally left the office on Christmas Eve, with no ceremony or additional thought, he shut off the light.
?By that time I was ready to go,? Pagano said. ?And so I just shut her down and headed home.?
Sunday against the Texans, Pagano will return to the job he was hired to do 11 months ago. He will coach a game for the first time since Week 3.
?When I got diagnosed back on Sept. 26 and the doctor told me exactly what I had and what I had to do to get better, it was just like getting a game plan for Sunday,? Pagano said. ?Doctor gave me a game plan. We put it together. I followed orders best I could. There was never a doubt in my mind at all.?
?Never been gone?
Pagano fought the life-threatening disease for three months. He finished his final round of chemotherapy Dec. 4. His cancer has been in remission since Nov. 5.
Pagano was diagnosed with the disease Sept. 26. As he fought the disease for nearly three months, his presence never left the Colts facility. It wasn?t just the light that Arians kept on in Pagano?s office.
?It sort of feels like he?s never been gone,? Colts quarterback Andrew Luck said. ?It?s just natural for him to fit in. It?s what he does. He?s a football coach.
?Obviously, it?s great to hear his voice. There?s, I think, a little bit more energy because he?s around and that?s not a slight on anybody else but just the fact that he?s here, guys are jazzed up. It feels like he?s always been there.?
#CHUCKSTRONG became both a Twitter hashtag and a mantra in Indianapolis.
Players and cheerleaders shaved their heads in solidarity and to aid cancer research.
A Texans? salute
From Houston, receiver Andre Johnson monitored Pagano?s progress. Pagano had recruited him to the University of Miami more than a decade ago. Johnson often asked Colts receiver Reggie Wayne, his close friend, for updates on Pagano?s progress.
?He was almost like he was a part of our family as much as he was around,? Johnson said. ?It was great to see him back out. I?m pretty sure there will be a lot of emotion and stuff going on. It was hard for me to hear what he was going through, but I?m glad he was able to fight through it.?
And on the field the Colts almost magically became a team that looked nothing like the rebuilding franchise most in the NFL expected. Quickly, Luck showed his talent as a first overall pick.
Despite releasing Peyton Manning in the offseason, the Colts, who won only two games last season, have already won 10 this year. Improbably, they are heading back to the playoffs and have nothing to gain or lose in Sunday?s game. The Colts have secured the fifth seed in the AFC playoffs.
?It would have been an easy way to say woe is me and just kind of go in the tank a little bit,? Wayne said. ?But guys just stayed focused. ? We?re on our way to the dance. Everybody knows that once you?re dancing anything can happen. This will be a great start for that playoff run going against (Houston) again this week.?
Standing ovation
On Monday, Pagano returned to work and a week full of the ordinary things every NFL coach does. Film study, meetings, practice and press conferences.
?I felt good afterwards,? Pagano said. ?I?ve got most of my weight back and getting stronger and healthier every day. It seemed, obviously, a little bit longer than what my previous days had been.?
There was one major difference upon his return. When he walked into his first team meeting back Monday, his players gave him a standing ovation.
?Everybody was excited to see him back,? Colts receiver Reggie Wayne said. ?We knew how hard he worked. It?s always good to have your general back in action. Once again, to him, it just goes to show you how strong he is, how tough he is, just to get back out there and kind of walk around and smell the shoulder pads.?

It had been a while since any of my friends had spent significant time together online in Call of Duty or Madden or World of Warcraft or any of the big-budget experiences we knew as multiplayer gaming. Things like deadlines, dinner parties and changing diapers were taking up all of our time. But suddenly, here we were, playing and competing with one another just like the old days.
Chris Suellentrop, Stephen Totilo, Kirk Hamilton and others discuss the year in video games.
The game was Letterpress, a lovely word game for the iPhone. Imagine if Boggle and Chess birthed a brilliantly gifted child who?d been raised by Steve Jobs. Beautifully simple at first, the game is deviously layered and complex and, even better, is played one-on-one in an asynchronous manner. When one player completes a turn he must wait for the other player to go before it?s his turn again. This allows the player to take a turn anywhere, anytime.
Games like this had come and gone. Words With Friends and Draw Something were both national phenomena. But for some reason, neither had grabbed us like Letterpress.
The game took over our lives this year. We made multiple moves an hour, with several games going at once. We played back and forth during any free time we had, rekindling old friendships and rivalries we hadn?t exercised since the freeloading days of college.
Then, it all changed with a simple question: ?Did you go yet??
The first time I heard that, it was a friend at work as we passed by each other in the hall. I looked at him, confused at first, unsure of what he was asking. He reiterated, ?In Letterpress. Did you go yet??
?Oh, no. But I will.? I said, surprised to hear about this offline.
?Good,? he responded. ?You always take so long to play.?
I take so long to play? Well, guess what, dude, I?m busy. I put in long days at work. I have to buy things from time to time. I eat. I have a family. And I was just told by my own children to put the iPhone down. So, yes, I take my time.
The interchange gnawed at me. This was an entirely new development. Guilt. Anger. Betrayal. All because I wouldn?t play this dumb little iPhone game. Looking back, my friend probably did care about what was happening in my life at the time but he was blinded himself. He just wanted to play his turn.
I slowed way down, stopped opening the game. Other things took over my free time. The games began to pile up. Friends started coming out of the woodwork, trying to get me to play my turns. I got texts from some, e-mails from others. One guy even took the time to put a Post-it note on my computer. These people ? who I work with and love ? were suddenly on my back, all the time. I started to actively avoid places I knew I?d see them, turned corners more quickly, closed my door more.
It was in one of these moments, holed up in my office, wondering exactly how many people out there were waiting on me to just take my turn, that I decided to end it all. I pulled out my iPhone, held down the little icon, and deleted Letterpress. I took a deep breath and a wave of relief washed over me. I was out. Free.
At first, no one believed my departure would last. I assured them it was real. They scoffed, told me what I was missing out on, and would try to talk about the game to make me feel guilty. I didn?t care. In less than a week, my life was back to normal and my friends went back to being friends.
They say 2012 was the year of the social game. Don?t believe them. This was actually the year of the antisocial game and the smartest thing I did was get out.
At least until the next invitation shows up in my inbox in 2013.

The October release of Microsoft?s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows 8 operating system and Surface tablet was meant to inaugurate an ?epic year? for the company, one that would see a resurgence in the sales of PC devices. To further this goal, the software designer continued down the path pioneered by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and expanded its chain of Microsoft-brand retail stores, a practice that the company will build upon in the upcoming year.
However, sales of the company?s Windows 8 flagship product, the Surface tablet, and customer foot traffic during the holiday season showed that the Apple-store model has not brought an Apple-store level of success.
Our 20-page proprietary analysis of Apple?s stock is ready. Click here to get your Cheat Sheet report now.
What are Microsoft?s plans for its retail locations?
Microsoft?s plans to expand its network of retail stores mirrors the company?s broader transformation; with the release of the Surface, the company took another step beyond its software design beginnings to further incorporate hardware design into its business. Just as Microsoft has taken note of the success of Apple?s retail stores, which have the most profitable floor space of any top company in the United States, the company has also taken note of the iPhone maker?s success with vertical integration.

If you?ve been riding horses for a while, you?ll probably have experienced the actual joy of riding a horse that?s remarkably highly trained. But did you ever give thought to the amounts of time and energy, and probably money, spent on making that pony that way?
You can?t train a horse in a day, a week or a month, I?d go so far as to say a year, because so far as I am concerned , coaching is an everlasting process. It takes amazing patience and persistence.
When coaching a horse, it is essentially a battle between your patience and the horse?s resistance. If you show implacable patience, you?ll come out the winner. If you lose patience and snap on any particular day, you lost that day?s battle. Lose too many battles and you?ll land up losing the war. Handling horses is like handling youngsters. Anger and disappointment only inflame bad circumstances. Annoyance has no role to play in training or handling a horse, and demonstration of annoyance is a conclusive no-no. Loud remonstrations, cursing and physical action are among the seven deadly sins.
If you cannot accept the unshakable fact that there is no alternative choice to patience, you?ve no business coaching horses. My apologies, but that?s the blunt truth. Each shortcut you take today is a failure waiting to happen along the way some other day. Like most kids, horses learn only through continual repetition. And like with kids, some horses need a load more repetition than other horses.
If you come across any books or videos or audios that guarantee to show you exactly how to teach your pony everything it needs to be taught in one hour, a day or a month, you want to burn that baloney. The single thing you achieve with super fast teaching techniques is disaster. Your pony isn?t designed by nature to be a genius, so don?t try and make him one. When he learns at his very own pace, he learns for life. When he learns at a turbocharged pace, he learns for an hour, or perhaps a day. It is irrelevant that you take days to show him something that to you seems to be the easiest thing in the world to learn. You are not a horse, and your horse is not you. Start every day with your horse brightly, and make sure it ends brightly. If you happen to feel anger building up over something, take the day off and do something, anything that has nothing to do with horses. Tomorrow will always dawn fresh.
As vital as patience is persistence is. Your horse is not going to learn consistently if you?re not teaching him consistently.
For all the undeniable fact that it could take a lot of time, horse training is not a difficult task. The most important challenge is finding the patience needed. Any person who tells you that horse coaching is a difficult task is either too lazy to try it himself, or has screwed up by using shortcuts. Malicious manipulation of whips, bits and spurs will only bring about a rebellious horse, and the more the punishment, the more the defiance.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia is seeking to revive last summer's failed peace plan for Syria during talks with a top Syrian diplomat and the international envoy on the crisis, the foreign ministry said Thursday.
U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Monday and is to visit Moscow this weekend, spurring speculation that there is a new plan to end the country's bloody civil war that has killed more than 40,000 people.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich denied reports of the existence of a new U.S.-Russian peace initiative, saying Russia is focused instead on fulfilling the plan brokered by Brahimi's predecessor, Kofi Annan, which was approved at an international conference in Geneva in June.
"We are trying to find a solution on the basis of the Geneva plan," Lukashevich said. "We continue to believe that there is no alternative to that document in trying to find a settlement in Syria."
The plan envisioned an open-ended cease-fire to be enforced by hundreds of U.N. monitors, followed by talks on a political transition. It called for establishing a transitional government of national unity that could include members of Assad's government, the opposition and other groups to oversee the drafting of a new constitution and elections.
But, on Russia's insistence, it left the door open for Assad being part of the transition process and was rejected by the opposition. After an initial decrease in violence, the proposed cease-fire collapsed and Syria descended even further into bloodshed.
Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad met Thursday with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to pave the way for Brahimi's visit. Mekdad is expected to hold talks with other top Russian diplomats later.
Russia has used its veto right alongside China at the U.N. Security Council to protect its old ally from international sanctions, but it has increasingly sought to distance itself from the Syrian strongman.
Lavrov said last week that Moscow would welcome any country's asylum offer to Assad, but has no intention of sheltering him if he steps down.
At the same time, Moscow has given no signal of a shift in its firm opposition to international sanctions against Assad and calls for him to step down.
Lukashevich said again Thursday that calls for Assad's ouster run contrary to the Geneva plan and criticized the West for backing the opposition push for the regime's ouster.
He reaffirmed that Moscow has plans to evacuate its citizens if the situation worsens, but rejected reports that a Russian navy squadron en route to the Mediterranean has such a mission.

From IPOs and shakeouts to acquisitions and crunches, it?s been another exciting, bewildering year in tech. Continuing with our year-end coverage, here?s part 2 of our ?Best of 2012? series.
Best Viral Video
Staff pick:?Dollar Shave Club. Yes, Gangnam Style has a record 1 billion YouTube hits, but for our purposes, let?s give it to DSC because it?s the only one that fulfilled a business objective for a startup. And hey, 7.8 million views is nothing to snuff at, especially for a startup promotional video.

Staff pick: Buzzfeed.?This category is a controverisial one as you might imagine in a newsroom like PandoDaily that?s avowedly anti-page views. But like it or hate it, Buzzfeed is doing something new. Not only have they combined cat videos with investigative reporting (to varying degrees of success) but they?ve dramatically pioneered new business models, even though they have the metrics to make millions off of lame banner ads. Jonah Peretti is one of the best thinkers in the world on social sharing, virality and sponsored content, and this is a company committed to going long when many other media companies are content for quick flips or building lifestyle businesses.
Reader pick:?Buzzfeed
Social Network of the Year

Staff pick:?LinkedIn. Yeah, Pinterest took off out of nowhere, Facebook finally went public and Instagram had an unexpected $1 billion exit on a skeleton crew. But LinkedIn is the only member of the mega-Consumer IPOcrop that is still trading above its offering price. Sorry, but that wins for literally billions of reasons.
Reader pick:?Twitter

Dec. 24, 2012 ? New York University biologists have identified how a vital protein is loaded by others into the centromere, the part of the chromosome that plays a significant role in cell division. Their findings shed new light on genome replication and may offer insights into the factors behind the production of abnormal numbers of chromosomes.
Their findings appear in the latest issue of the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers focused on the organization and functioning of the centromere, which is responsible for chromosome segregation -- a process that ensures that replicating cells receive a complete copy of the genome. Disruption of this process can lead to the production of an abnormal number of chromosomes -- a condition evident in 90 percent of cancer cases.
To explore the mechanics of the centromere, the researchers examined fission yeast. This species of yeast is a model organism in cell biology because its chromosome replication and the regulation of its centromere are similar to that of humans.
In the PNAS study, the researchers focused on a protein, CENP-A, present in both humans and fission yeast. They specifically examined how it is incorporated into the centromere during cell division in order to better understand its role in this process.
Their results identified that a trio of proteins -- Dos1, Dos2, and Cdc20 -- work together to assemble CENP-A at centromeres as they duplicate. They further observed that any disruption of this process subsequently places this vital protein outside of the centromere -- thereby preventing it from performing its role of ensuring proper chromosome segregation.
"CENP-A is the engineer of the centromere," explained Fei Li, an assistant professor in NYU's Department of Biology and the study's senior author. "Without this protein, the centromere simply can't function."
Li noted that many forms of cancer have been linked to malfunctioning CENP-A.
"Hopefully, these findings can contribute toward the development of improved strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer," he added.
The study's other co-authors were: post-doctoral fellows Marlyn Gonz?lez and Haijin He, Siyu Sun, an NYU graduate student, and Chen Li, who obtained her masters degree from NYU in 2012.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -- A powerful storm system that erupted Christmas Day with Gulf Coast tornadoes and snow in the nation's midsection headed for the Northeast on Wednesday, spreading blizzard conditions that slowed holiday travel.
The death toll rose to six with car accidents on snow and sleet-slickened highways in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Post-Christmas travelers braced for flight delays and a raft of weather warnings for drivers, a day after rare winter twisters damaged buildings in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
Snow blew across southern Illinois and southern Indiana early Wednesday as the storm tracked up the Ohio River valley toward the Eastern seaboard and New England.
There were whiteout conditions in parts of southwestern Indiana, where 6 inches or more of snow had fallen by midmorning around Evansville. State police reported dozens of vehicles stuck after not being able to get up a hill on a central Indiana highway, while some roads around Evansville were impassable with wind gusts around 30 mph.
A blizzard warning was in effect for much of the state's southern two-thirds and more than a dozen counties issued travel watches asking residents to make only essential driving trips.
Indianapolis had 7 inches on the ground by 10 a.m. after receiving as much as 3 inches of snow in a single hour, said John Kwiatkowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. He said the storm's winds were just high enough to classify the storm as a blizzard, making it one of the strongest snowstorms in years to strike central and southern Indiana.
"The way I've been describing it is as a low-end blizzard, but that's sort of like saying a small Tyrannosaurus rex. Just to become a blizzard is quite an accomplishment. And it's sure a heck of a lot more than we've seen," he said.
In Arkansas, the storm left more than 189,000 customers without electricity Wednesday, utility Entergy Arkansas said.
Severe thunderstorms were forecast for the Carolinas while a line of blizzard and winter storm warnings stretched from Arkansas up the Ohio River to New York and on to Maine.
State police reported scores of accidents on snow-covered highways in central and western Maryland, where forecasters predicted up to 5 inches of snow in most counties west of the Baltimore-Washington area, followed by freezing rain.
Thirty-four tornadoes were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during the outbreak Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.
Rick Cauley's family was hosting relatives for Christmas when tornado sirens went off in Mobile. Not taking any chances, he and his wife, Ashley, hustled everyone down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile's Murphy High School in Mobile.
It turns out, that wasn't the place to head.
"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley said. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second." They were all fine, though the school was damaged, as were a church and several homes, but officials say no one was seriously injured.
Camera footage captured the approach of the large funnel cloud.
Mobile was the biggest city hit by numerous twisters. Along with brutal, straight-line winds, the storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Torrential rains drenched the region and several places saw flash flooding.
More than 900 flights around the U.S. were canceled as of Wednesday midday, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. The cancelations were mostly spread around airports that had been or soon would be in the path of the storm.
Holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fast-moving storms. In Arkansas, highway department officials said the state was fortunate the snowstorm hit on Christmas Day when many travelers were already at their destinations.
Two passengers in a car on a sleet-slickened Arkansas highway died Wednesday when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck an SUV head-on. In Oklahoma, the Highway Patrol said a 76-year-old Wisconsin woman died Tuesday when the car she was riding in was hit head-on by a pickup truck on Interstate 44.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol had earlier reported that a 28-year-old woman was killed in another crash Tuesday on a snowy highway. The storm's winds were blamed Tuesday for toppling a tree onto a pickup truck in Texas, killing the driver, and another tree onto a house in Louisiana, killing a man there.
Trees fell on homes and across roadways in several communities in southern Mississippi and Louisiana. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency, saying eight counties reported damages and some injuries.
It included McNeill, where a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.
The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity for a time.
Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power for at least a time in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.
Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky up to Cleveland with predictions of several inches to a foot of snow. By the end of the week, that snow was expected to move into the Northeast with again up to a foot predicted
Jason Gerth said the Mobile tornado passed by in a few moments and from his porch, he saw about a half-dozen green flashes in the distance as transformers blew. His home was spared.
"It missed us by 100 feet and we have no damage," Gerth said.

In the beginning there were four Dragon Gods: Ieer, Ki, Domieen and Barthomel. These four Gods pooled their power and created the land of Lastra (in the last RP it was called Dragoon. Lastra and Dragoon are one in the same.). They created humans to start, then elves, dwarves and other races of old. Each dragon had a companion whom shared in their power and glory. The Dragon God's also created other dragons in their image. Thus the race of dragons and men was born.
However, Barthomel, a large red dragon, turned his back on the other three and suddenly waged war upon them. He lusted for more power and thought that their creations had gone far enough, and had taken far too much from them. Ieer, Ki and Domieen fought back. Their war lasted for many years. Cities were destroyed, some races driven to near extinction, and the crack of Godly power coursed through the skies for days. The Gods were not alone in their fight, for those that they created fought with them as well.
Near the end of the war, Domieen shifted sides for unknown reasons and it was the final battle between the four Gods. Finally, Ieer and Ki managed to destroy Barthomel, throwing him down in their last expel of power. Both dragons died thinking that they'd killed both Domieen and Barthomel in one sweep. However, they were very wrong. Domieen escaped death that day, and from then forward built his power and plotted in the darkness.
Talon V'lyn, a young assassin aged 22 at the time got caught up in the middle of everything and ended up with Ieer's bracer. The bracer held all of the old Dragon God's power, and it flooded the young assassin's body that wasn't supposed to be filled with magic. He met a beautiful mage along the way as well. Though beautiful, she was quite a handful, irking him often, tempting him often and driving him insane with just about everything she did. Talon's home, Skyfall, was sacked first, falling under a rebel group that later became known as 'The True Dragons'.
The True Dragon's began ravaging the lands right after, making their presence known. Next, Crystacia fell, their Queen killed by Domieen's hand. Under the words of 'Blood and Magic, our True God will Reign,' the rebel group sought to destroy everything in their path. Talon decided then that he would go after the rebels, and with him went the mage, Jennifer, a Dark elf from the old Alliance, Locien, another dark elf Lyuze and one of the few surviving elves of Crystacia, Rania. Together, they all traveled from city to city, following the visions that were given to Talon via the powerful bracer on his arm.
Ro'ell was the first city that Talon had a vision about. So the group set out to Ro'ell and attempted to save the city, only to suffer losses. First, Talon was struck hard by the realization that Jennifer wasn't entirely on his side about everything. She had her own reasons for fighting with him, but her heart lay with destruction, especially towards the city where she'd been raised. With her illusion magic, she made him witness her killing the King of the city. Afterwards, she was kidnapped by Domieen who confronted him. Meanwhile, Locien was also taken from the city. Both were brought to Laowlee, where Domieen had set up his base of operations. Locien was taken because of his power with a being called 'The Seeker', and Jennifer because she was a prodigy mage and superior in power to other mages.
As they fought with the True Dragons, growing closer to their goal, it slowly became apparent that the bracer was growing in power, and it was taking it's toll on Talon's body. In Kingsburrow, the assassin went to the library and researched the old lore to find that the bracer that was permanently stuck to his arm was that of the old Dragon God's Ieer. He was also informed that only mages and other beings of power would be able to handle it, anyone else would die from it slowly. With that in mind, he went right into battle anyway.
Jennifer found out about this, but he had already left her in a rush to evacuate the city before the attack came. Talon succeeded in saving only a portion of the cities inhabitant. He engaged in battle with Domieen, only to nearly lose his life in the process. The city crumpled then, caving in on itself by Domieen's utter power. Whilst the others made it safely out, Jennifer and Talon fell into the caves deep below the city and were left to their own devices to get out.
The group rendezvous back at Vaye where they meet up and come up with a new plan of action for taking on Domieen. It was decided that they should go after him at Laowlee, taking the beast by the lair, so to speak. So, they set out for Laowlee with an army behind them. Locien had rallied the Alliance, whilst Talon sent out word for the assassins to meet up with them as well.
(To make things short, and seeing as the RP 'Reign of Dragon's' is still going, I won't spoil too much for those who are joining in on this RP from that one ;) They don't kill Domieen in Laowlee, they have to go after a couple other things, engage in battle with Barthomel who will be raised, and eventually kill them both :D Yay! Okay, back to serious tone...)
Dragons and Companions
Dragons are a life long companion. They are connected to their companion through a mental connection that no one's really quite figured out just yet. All they know is that it happens when a Dragon picks a companion to be with. Both companion and dragon will feel each others emotions, read each others thoughts, console and tease each other in affection, and should one be hurt in anyway, the other would feel it.
If a dragon dies, the companion is put through hell, but they do not die. The companion may find another Dragon to be with. If the companion dies, the Dragon is also put through hell, but doesn't die. However, the Dragon will never find another companion to be with.
Dragon's are the main source of travel in Lastra. Though the war forty years ago dwindled their numbers, they still roam the land. However, they aren't reproducing like they used to. Ever so slowly, the dragons are becoming an extinct race here in Lastra. In another fifty years or so, the dragons will most likely be all but gone.

For many investors, their nest eggs make up their largest portion of investable assets. According to Fidelity Investments, the average 401(K) plan has a balance of $75,900, adding up to almost $1 trillion in retirement money. Add in the nation's individual retirement accounts (IRAs) and you're starting to talk about some serious money.
When any pending legislation or new rules affect these critical savings vehicles, investors should take notice. With that said, the new year plans to bring some big changes for both 401(K) and IRA accounts. These are changes that will help make it easier for investors to reach retirement milestones with ease. Here's what to expect in 2013.
Higher Contribution Limits
Perhaps the biggest news affecting our retirement accounts in 2013 is how much money we can put away in them. Back in October, the IRS threw savers a bone when it announced it would allow investors, in both 401(K)s and IRAs, the ability to contribute more in each account. Contribution limits will rise by $500 for the year. That means investors in workplace retirement accounts (401(K)s and 403(B)s) will now be able to stash $17,500 away tax deferred. Those using IRAs will now be able to save $5,500.
The reason for these changes has to do with inflation. The IRS uses a factor that takes into account the changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Since inflation has been mild, this was the first contribution increase for IRAs since 2008. Additionally, older workers (age 50 plus) are still able to save extra "catch-up" contributions of $1,000 for IRAs and $5,500 for 401(K)s.
Finally, Fee Disclosures
While most investors know that they pay management fees on the mutual funds, ETFs and unit investment trusts (UITs) with their 401(K), many have no idea just how much they are paying for everything. According to a recent AARP survey, nearly 71% of retirement plan participants do not think they pay any fees. Well, that's about to change. In 2013, the Department of Labor (DOL) is now requiring employers to ensure their clients understand the 401(k) fees that have taken a big bite out of many worker's retirement nest eggs. The fee disclosures will arrive on quarterly and annual 401(k) statements and show fees/returns compared to a benchmark "plan." If investors work for a large Fortune 500 firm they'll get a plan benchmarked to that index. Likewise, small mom and pop employees will see a comparable index. While there is only a few things investors can do if they think their plan is too expensive, like choose not to participate or push for changes at their HR department, the disclosures will shed light on just how much they may be paying for mediocre or subpar returns. That could prompt more HR departments to choose low-cost index funds in the future.
Increased IRA Limits
Investors with higher incomes have also gotten a few retirement breaks from the IRS as the income phase-outs to receive the tax deduction will go up in 2013. According to the IRS, the cost-of-living index adjustments allow for higher income thresholds for the deductions. That means investors, depending on how they are filing, can earn between $2,000 and $5,000 more in 2013 and still take the deduction.
The CPI adjustment also applies to those investors wanting to get access to a Roth IRA as well. That could be advantageous considering the Roth IRA is made with after-tax money and grows virtually tax free. The higher income limits will allow more people to take advantage for the savings vehicle.
Getting a Reward for Saving Anything at All
Finally, lower- to middle-income workers can also get extra rewards for saving anything for retirement. The Saver's Tax Credit, which is basically a bonus tax deduction worth $1,000 for individuals and $2,000 for couples, is getting a boost via higher income limits in 2013. Couples can earn up to $1,500 more next year and still claim the saver's credit, while single filers can now earn up to $29,500 in 2013. Likewise, heads of household can claim the credit until they earn $44,250. That's roughly $1,125 more than in 2012. The extra credit plus the tax-free power of a Roth IRA can be a portfolio combination for workers.
Get to Saving
For investors, the recent rules changes governing both 401(K)s and IRAs can be seen as a big win for the little guy. At their core, investors will now be able to put away more tax-deferred and tax-free money than ever before. That's good considering our longer life spans and income requirements when we retire.
The Bottom Line
While some people may find it difficult to reach the maximum limits allowed, saving anything is better than nothing. Investors should use the new year as a good starting point to bump up their contributions if they can.

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? A man who set his house on fire then lured firefighters to their deaths in a blaze of flames and bullets had attracted little attention since he got out of prison in the 1990s for killing his grandmother, authorities said.
But two months ago, William Spengler's mother died, leaving the 62-year-old ex-con in a Lake Ontario house with his sister, who he "couldn't stand," a friend said.
Spengler set a car and a house in his neighborhood ablaze early Monday, luring firefighters to the neighborhood and then killed two, wounded two others and injured a police officer while several homes burned around him, police said. Spengler then killed himself. His sister, Cheryl, was missing.
About 100 people attended an impromptu memorial vigil Monday evening in Webster, a suburb of Rochester. Dozens of bouquets were left at the fire station, along with a handwritten sign that said, "Thanks for protecting us. RIP."
Spengler, had been living in the home in Webster, a suburb of Rochester, with his mother and sister since his parole in 1998. He had served 17 years in prison after the beating death of his 92-year-old grandmother in 1980, for which he had originally been charged with murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter. His mother, Arline, died in October.
On Monday, Spengler fired at the four firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze, town police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first police officer who arrived chased the gunman and exchanged shots.
Spengler lay in wait outdoors for the firefighters' arrival, then opened fire probably with a rifle and from atop an earthen berm, Pickering said. "It does appear it was a trap," he said.
Authorities used an armored vehicle to help residents flee dozens of homes on the shore of Lake Ontario a day before Christmas. Police restricted access to the neighborhood, and officials said it was unclear whether there were other bodies in the seven houses left to burn.
Authorities said Spengler hadn't done anything to bring himself to their attention since his parole. As a convicted felon, he wasn't allowed to possess weapons. Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said Spengler led a very quiet life after he got out of prison.
A friend said Spengler hated his sister. Roger Vercruysse lived next door to Spengler and recalled a man who doted on his mother, whose obituary suggested contributions to the West Webster Fire Department.
"He loved his mama to death," said Vercruysse, who last saw his friend about six months ago.
Vercruysse also said Spengler "couldn't stand his sister" and "stayed on one side of the house and she stayed on the other."
The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire early Monday after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said.
The fire appeared from a distance as a pulsating ball of flame glowing against the early morning sky, flames licking into treetops and reflecting on the water, with huge bursts of smoke billowing away in a brisk wind.
Emergency radio communications capture someone saying he "could see the muzzle flash coming at me" as Spengler carried out his ambush. The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun - high powered ... semi or fully auto."
Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After Spengler fired, one of the wounded men fled, but the other three couldn't because of flying gunfire.
The police officer who exchanged gunfire with Spengler "in all likelihood saved many lives," Pickering said.
A police armored vehicle was used to recover two men, and eventually it removed 33 people from nearby homes, the police chief said. The gunfire initially kept firefighters from battling the blazes.
The dead men were identified as police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department's public information officer; and 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher.
Pickering described Chiapperini as a "lifetime firefighter" with nearly 20 years in the department, and he called Kaczowka a "tremendous young man."
Kaczowka's brother, reached at the family home Monday night, said he didn't want to talk.
The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.
Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.
At West Webster Fire Station 1, there were at least 20 bouquets on a bench in front and a bouquet of roses with three gold-and-white ribbons saying, "May they rest in peace," ''In the line of duty" and "In memory of our fallen brothers."
A handwritten sign says, "Thanks for protecting us, RIP." Two candles were lit to honor the dead.
Grieving firefighters declined to talk to reporters. At an impromptu memorial vigil Monday evening, about 100 people stood in the cold night air, some holding candles. A fire department spokesman made a brief appearance, thanked them all and told them to go home and appreciate their families.
Cathy Bartlett was there with her teenage son, who was good friends with Kaczowka. Bartlett's husband, Mark Bartlett, has been a firefighter there for 25 years but missed the call this morning.
"Thank God my husband slept through the first alarm and didn't get up until the second one went off," she said.
The shooting and fires were in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes set close together across the road from the lakeshore. The area is popular with recreational boaters but is normally quiet this time of year.
"We have very few calls for service in that location," Pickering said. "Webster is a tremendous community. We are a safe community, and to have a tragedy befall us like this is just horrendous."
O'Flynn lamented the violence, which comes on the heels of other shootings including the massacre of 20 students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
"It's sad to see that this is becoming more commonplace in communities across the nation," O'Flynn said.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the State Police and Office of Emergency Management were working with local authorities.
"Volunteer firefighters and police officers were injured and two were taken from us as they once again answered the call of duty," Cuomo said in a statement. "We as the community of New York mourn their loss as now two more families must spend the holidays without their loved ones."
Webster, a middle-class suburb, now is the scene of violence linked to house fires for two Decembers in a row.
Last Dec. 7, authorities say, a 15-year-old boy doused his home with gasoline and set it ablaze, killing his father and two brothers, 16 and 12. His mother and 13-year-old sister escaped with injuries. He is being prosecuted as an adult.

December Markets At a Glance From Eric Sprott:
As long-time students of precious metals investing, there are certain things we understand. One is that, historically, the availability ratio of silver to gold has had a direct influence on the price of the metals. The current availability ratio of physical silver to gold for investment purposes is approximately 3:1. Investors are choosing to buy silver at a ratio to gold that is well above what is available. This uptrend doesn?t show any signs of slowing either. The ratio of the physical silver to gold is both rising and extraordinarily above the availability ratio of 3:1. So, why is it that investors are allocating their dollars to silver at a much higher ratio? What is it that these ?smart? investors understand? Let?s have a look at the numbers and see if it?s time for investors to do as a wise man once said and ?follow the money.?
?
2013 Silver Eagles As Low as $2.59 Over Spot at SDBullion!
?
Markets At a Glance, By Eric Sprott:
Average annual gold mine production is approximately 80 million ounces, which together with an estimated average 50?million ounces of annual recycled gold, totals around 130 million ounces available per year. In comparison, annual mined silver production has averaged around 750 million ounces, while recycled silver is estimated at 250?million ounces per year, which adds up to approximately 1 billion ounces. Using this data, there is roughly 8?times more silver available to buy than there is gold. However, not all gold and silver is available for investment purposes, due to their use in industrial applications. It is estimated that for investment purposes (jewelry, bars and coins), the annual availability of gold is roughly 120 million ounces, and of silver it is 350 million ounces. Therefore, the ratio of physical silver availability to gold availability is 350/120, or ~3:1.1
Now, let?s examine how investors are allocating their investments between gold and silver. The data below is from the US Mint showing gold and silver sales in ounces:
Source: US Mint (www.usmint.gov)
As you can see, investors are choosing to buy silver at a ratio to gold that is well above what is available. This uptrend doesn?t show any signs of slowing either. The ratio of the physical silver to gold is both rising and extraordinarily above the availability ratio of 3:1.
We can also use other data such as the most recent issues of the Sprott Physical Gold and Silver Trusts. The last Gold Trust issue in September 2012 raised US$393 million and the last Silver Trust issue raised US$310 million. On the basis of prices for each metal at the time of issue, we could purchase ~213 thousand ounces of gold and ~9.1 million ounces of silver. This represents a purchase ratio of 43:1.
If we examine ETF holdings in both gold and silver, we note that in the period from 2007 to 2012, the increase in silver holdings amounted to 12,000 tonnes, compared to 1,200 tonnes of gold ? meaning, investors purchased ten times more silver than gold.
These are only three factual data points to consider, but there are other indications that silver investment demand is way out of line with availability. Our favourite question to the bullion dealers we meet, is to ask the ratio of their dollar sales in gold versus silver. The answer is that dollar sales are equal, which means that physical silver sales relative to gold are greater than 50:1.
A recent news headline on Mineweb read, ?Silver Sales to Outshine Gold in India.2? It went on to quote a bullion dealer that ?investors and jewelry lovers prefer silver jewelry these days.? As the largest importer of gold in the world, it would be impossible for India to purchase an equivalent amount of silver, as it would require more than one billion ounces, essentially more than the current annual mine production.
While these last two confirmations of silver demand are anecdotal, the statistics from the US Mint, the ETFs, and our Physical Trust issues, are factual.
For the time being, the silver price is essentially set in the paper market where the daily average trade on the Comex is approximately 300 million ounces. An outrageous number when you compare it to the daily mine production of about 2 million ounces. As Bart Chilton, Commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission stated on October 26, 2010, ?I believe there have been repeated attempts to influence prices in silver markets. There have been fraudulent efforts to persuade and deviously control that price. Based on what I have been told and reviewed in publicly available documents, I believe violations to the Commodity Exchange Act have taken place in the silver market and any such violation of the law in this regard should be prosecuted.?3
Which brings us back to the phrase ?Follow the money.? In our view, it is almost inconceivable that investors would allocate as many dollars to silver as they would to gold, but that is what the data shows.
The silver investment market is very small. While the dollar value of gold in the world approaches $9 trillion, the value of silver in the forms of jewelry, coins, bars and silverware is estimated at around $150 billion (5 billion ounces at $30 per ounce). This is a ratio of 60:1 in dollar terms.4
How long can investors continue to buy silver at the current ratios when the availability for investment is only 3:1? We are surprised that the price of silver has remained at such a depressed level compared to gold. Historically, the price ratio between gold and silver has been 16:1, when both were currencies. Today the ratio is 55:1, so what are the numbers telling us? We believe this is one of those times when smart investors will be well rewarded to ?Follow the money.?
On behalf of all of us at Sprott, I wish you safe and happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.
P.S. ? US Mint Sold Out of Silver Eagle Bullion Coins Until January 7, 2013
The Mint recently informed authorized purchasers that all remaining inventories of 2012-dated Silver Eagle bullion coins had sold out and no additional coins would be struck. Since the 2013-dated coins will not be available to order until January 7, 2013, this leaves a three week void for the Mint?s most popular bullion offering.
