Domino's profit rises, boosted by new pan pizzas

(Reuters) - Domino's Pizza Inc , the second-largest U.S. pizza chain, on Thursday reported quarterly profit above Wall Street's view as U.S. restaurant sales beat expectations with help from its new pan pizzas.

The results from Domino's landed at a time when a bevy of U.S. operators, including Burger King Worldwide Inc and Olive Garden parent Darden Restaurants Inc , have warned that the U.S. payroll tax increase, higher gas prices and delayed federal tax returns are taking a bite out of spending on meals away from home.

Net income at Domino's rose 22 percent to $37.6 million, or 64 cents per share during the fourth quarter.

Analysts, on average, had expected Domino's to report a profit of 60 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue increased almost 8 percent to $539.7 million.

Sales at stores open at least one year rose 4.7 percent in the United States - more than expected and helped by the introduction of pan pizza. International same-restaurant sales increased 5.2 percent.

Domino's competes with Yum Brands Inc's Pizza Hut chain and Papa John's International Inc .

Shares in the company, which also announced a quarterly dividend on Thursday, were up 2.2 percent to $47.88 in midday trading.

Big East break-up picks up speed

NEW YORK (AP) ? The breakup of the Big East's football and basketball schools appears to be on the fast track.

The major college football members will meet in Atlanta on Friday to discuss the departure of the seven basketball schools that are planning to leave the conference and create a new league.

According to media reports, the basketball schools plan to have their new conference up and running for the 2013-14 school year and will pay the football schools to keep the Big East name and play its conference tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco says no deal has been completed between the two groups but "some of this stuff is clearly coming down to the wire."

Study: Boozy Brits underestimate their drinking

LONDON (AP) ? Truth and alcohol may not mix, particularly when people are asked how much they drink.

That's the implication of a study released Wednesday that reveals a big gap between the booze Britons own up to drinking and the amount of alcohol sold nationwide. The study indicates that people routinely underestimate their alcohol consumption by around 40 percent.

That may not be particularly surprising, but the study puts a figure to the phenomenon of the drunk who claims not to have anything more than a couple of beers. Lead author Sadie Boniface said the unreported alcohol equates to nearly one bottle of wine per British adult per week ? an amount she said wasn't just disappearing.

"It has to have gone somewhere," she said in a telephone interview.

Boniface and Nicola Shelton, both with the University College London's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, derived their figures by comparing self-reported data in a public health survey accounting for 14,041 people aged 16 and up to alcohol sales figures kept by British tax authorities.

The gap was huge. More than 20 percent of Britons' annual wine consumption ? or 2.6 million hectoliters (69 million gallons) ? was unaccounted for. Nearly half of Britons' beer consumption ? 45 million hectoliters (1.2 billion gallons) ? was unclaimed. And Britons seemed particularly reluctant to take credit for gulping down whiskey, vodka, tequila and gin. Nearly 60 percent of Britain's spirit consumption remained unreported.

Boniface said the more accurate reporting of wine versus beer and spirits might have something to do with the cultural baggage attached to them.

"If you think about drinking wine, you generally think of sitting around a fancy meal," she said. "It's thought of as much more of a civilized drinking occasion than drinking spirits might be, although that's just speculation."

The study, published in the European Journal of Public Health, considered a host of other possible reasons for the underreporting. Maybe children under the age of 16, tourists or homeless people ? all groups which wouldn't have been covered by the survey ? were buying the unclaimed booze. Maybe the whiskey was being kept on shelves rather than being sipped after dinner. Maybe the wine was being used in cooking, or thrown out when it expired, or being spilled across white carpets.

Boniface said those factors were all considered and then ruled out.

"It can't be a small minority ? such as homeless people ? that are drinking vast, vast amounts," she said. "It's a widespread problem."

Issues around self-reporting aren't new ? people routinely overestimate their height or underestimate their weight, for example. And it's long been known that alcohol intake is particularly liable to be underreported; Boniface said that many doctors mentally double the alcohol intake given to them by their patients.

But Boniface said the study fleshed out an issue which is particularly salient in the context of Britain's struggle to control a surge in boozing which has seen Britain's annual alcohol-related death toll more than double between 1992 and 2008. If authorities don't know how much Britons are drinking, she said, then how can they get a handle on the situation?

Underreporting has "huge consequences for public health," she said, "and we don't have any idea what they are."

Benedict gets new title, new shoes for retirement

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI will be known as "emeritus pope" in his retirement and will continue to wear a white cassock, the Vatican announced Tuesday, again fueling concerns about potential conflicts arising from having both a reigning and a retired pope.

The pope's title and what he would wear have been a major source of speculation ever since Benedict stunned the world and announced he would resign on Thursday, the first pontiff to do so in 600 years.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Benedict himself had made the decision in consultation with others, settling on "Your Holiness Benedict XVI" and either emeritus pope or emeritus Roman pontiff.

Lombardi said he didn't know why Benedict had decided to drop his other main title: bishop of Rome.

In the two weeks since Benedict's resignation announcement, Vatican officials had suggested that Benedict would likely resume wearing the traditional black garb of a cleric and would use the title "emeritus bishop of Rome" so as to not create confusion with the future pope.

Benedict's decision to call himself emeritus pope and to keep wearing white is sure to fan concern voiced privately by some cardinals about the awkward reality of having two popes, both living within the Vatican walls.

Adding to the concern is that Benedict's trusted secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, will be serving both pontiffs ? living with Benedict at the monastery inside the Vatican and keeping his day job as prefect of the new pope's household.

Asked about the potential conflicts, Lombardi was defensive, saying the decisions had been clearly reasoned and were likely chosen for the sake of simplicity.

"I believe it was well thought out," he said.

Benedict himself has made clear he is retiring to a lifetime of prayer and meditation "hidden from the world." However, he still will be very present in the tiny Vatican city-state, where his new home is right next door to the Vatican Radio and has a lovely view of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.

While he will no longer wear his trademark red shoes, Benedict has taken a liking to a pair of hand-crafted brown loafers made for him by artisans in Leon, Mexico, and given to him during his 2012 visit. He will wear those in retirement, Lombardi said.

Lombardi also elaborated on the College of Cardinals meetings that will take place after the papacy becomes vacant ? crucial gatherings in which cardinals will discuss the problems facing the church and set a date for the start of the conclave to elect Benedict's successor.

The first meeting isn't now expected until Monday, Lombardi said, since the official convocation to cardinals to come to Rome will only go out on Friday ? the first day of what's known as the "sede vacante," or the vacancy between papacies.

In all, 115 cardinals under the age of 80 are expected in Rome for the conclave to vote on who should become the next pope; two other eligible cardinals have already said they are not coming, one from Britain and another from Indonesia. Cardinals who are 80 and older can join the College meetings but won't participate in the conclave or vote.

Benedict on Monday gave the cardinals the go-ahead to move up the start date of the conclave ? tossing out the traditional 15-day waiting period. But the cardinals won't actually set a date for the conclave until they begin meeting officially Monday.

Lombardi also further described Benedict's final 48 hours as pope: On Tuesday, he was packing, arranging for documents to be sent to the various archives at the Vatican and separating out the personal papers he will take with him into retirement.

On Wednesday, Benedict will hold his final public general audience in St. Peter's Square ? an event that has already seen 50,000 ticket requests. He won't greet visiting prelates or VIPs as he normally does at the end but will greet some visiting leaders ? from Slovakia, San Marino, Andorra and his native Bavaria ? privately afterwards.

On Thursday, the pope meets with his cardinals in the morning and then flies by helicopter at 5 p.m. to Castel Gandolfo, the papal residence south of Rome. He will greet parishioners there from the palazzo's loggia (balcony) ? his final public act as pope.

And at 8 p.m., the exact time at which his retirement becomes official, the Swiss Guards standing outside the doors of the palazzo at Castel Gandolfo will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church now finished.

Benedict's personal security will be assured by Vatican police, Lombardi said.

Fujitsu had a third set on hand at its booth on opening day here at MWC 2013: the Arrows V F-04E. Launched as part of the NTT DoCoMo's winter lineup, this is the first opportunity we've had to get a hands-on as of course this set will never end up anywhere near our shores. The F-04E is loaded with everything one could expect in a high-end set like a 4.7-inch 720p display -- and it is wondrous to behold -- a 13.1-megapixel camera, 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, integrated 1seg TV antenna and a whopping 64GB of storage.

The Arrows V, aside from the odd obsession Fujitsu seems to have on insisting to hide all its USB ports under tough to open flip up open doors, is a very slick handset. The lines are clean, the display -- did we mention it is lovely? -- clear and easy read from every angle. Sadly for us the booth's requisite bowl of water or fountain was missing in action so we couldn't do a dunk test but we did manage to capture a bit of video and a gallery for you to enjoy.

Investors face two sets of rules for banks' loan losses

LONDON (Reuters) - Investors will have to grapple with two sets of rules for how banks recognize losses on loans after the world's two main accounting regulators failed to agree a common approach.

At the height of the financial crisis in 2009, the Group of 20 industrial and industrializing nations asked the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) to align their rules to make cross-border comparisons between companies easier.

They specifically requested new rules to force banks to acknowledge impaired loans much sooner, which might allow them to address problems in good time and prevent a repeat of taxpayer bailouts.

IASB Chairman Hans Hoogervorst said on Monday the board's new impairment rule would be published in early March but alignment with the U.S. equivalent was highly unlikely.

"It's still a long shot. We are taking a different course," Hoogervorst told a meeting of the board's advisory council, and ruling out a shift by the IASB to the U.S. model.

FASB wants all expected losses on a loan to be recognized up front while the IASB, whose rules are used in over 100 countries, thinks there should be an actual deterioration in a loan, such as late payment, before losses have to be recorded.

"The outside world, especially the regulatory community, is growing increasingly restless. I understand that and we are going to finish, whatever it takes," Hoogervorst, a former Dutch finance minister and markets regulator, said.

"We cannot wait for a magic moment of convergence to come. If we can't get a joint solution, then so be it."

In a public consultation of its proposals, the IASB will ask whether a planned January 2015 start date for its new rule is still practical.

IASB officials also said requiring banks to make disclosures to bridge the gap between two different sets of rules could be costly.

INSURANCE CONCERNS

The IASB will also publish in June draft revisions to its insurance contracts accounting rule but seek feedback on only a handful of elements, raising concerns in the industry.

"We believe there are still a lot of important issues. It's very difficult to have a clear view of how the model proposed will work," Jacques Le Douit of the European Insurance and Reinsurance Federation told the meeting.

The changes proposed could introduce volatility into financial statements, added Jerry de St. Paer from the Group of North American Insurance Enterprises.

Hoogervorst said the sector had already won several concessions and, despite a decade of deliberation, there was still no accounting rule to show where insurers stood.

Accounting risked failing to flag problems unless the rule was changed in a timely way, he said.

"We have got to get this done. I am much more worried about this than impairment. At least everybody knows the banks are in trouble and they are probably hiding some losses. In insurance, I don't think we know," Hoogervorst added.

Skullcandy headphones keep surprising me. The lineup has definitely kept its sporty, skater-esque stylings, but the internals seem to be improving. The recent Skullcandy Navigator?is a solid, bass-friendly budget option, and the Hesh 2, starting at $69.95 (direct) for models with the inline remote, offers a refined sound signature that is crisp and relatively balanced. Plus, the audio is delivered distortion-free, with an emphasis on mid-range and high frequency clarity.

Design
No Skullcandy product would be complete without multiple style options, paint jobs, and price tiers. The Hesh 2, with no mic and black-on-black design, sells for $59.95 (direct). Add in the inline mic and phone controls, and the lowest pricing is $69.95. Then, of course, you can buy a pair that has your favorite team's logo on it, or one that is covered in hemp. Those range from $79.95 and up.

Given all of the above, it's almost pointless to discuss the overall look of the Hesh 2, since it is basically a chameleon that comes in several styles and flavors. The overall shape doesn't really change, however?a simple, padded headband meets circular ear cups that also protrude outward, taking the shape of globes sliced in half.

The circumaural (around the ear) design of the Hesh 2 can feel a little rigid and awkward, as if the ear cups are a bit too small to fit an entire ear inside them. It's not uncomfortable, really, just awkward?the cups would probably be better served if they were either a bit larger, our more appropriately matched to an ear's shape, and not perfect circles. Regardless, the headphones are quite lightweight and don't grow uncomfortable during longer listening sessions.

The Hesh 2, as previously mentioned, is available with or without the inline remote and microphone. Call clarity through the mic is not astounding, but your call partner will understand you and you'll understand them. In other words, you're dealing with typical low-fi cellular fidelity.

One nice perk: the cable is detachable. This adds value to your purchase; replacing a faulty cable is far cheaper than buying an entire new pair of headphones or sending things in for repair, and cables are the most common culprit when headphones malfunction. Finally, a black drawstring bag is included with the Hesh 2.

Performance
The Hesh 2 does not distort on tracks with deep bass, even at high volumes. Its overall response is limited in the sub-bass realm. It does reproduce truly deep frequencies, but not with the same amount of gusto as, say, the Beats by Dr. Dre. The Knife's "Silent Shout," which has tremendous sub-bass content, can be played at maximum (and unsafe) volume without distorting, and you will get a good sense of the intensity of the bass, but this is not a deep bass lovers dream. However, bass fiends on a budget won't feel ripped off. Like some studio monitor-style headphones, the Hesh 2 provides a clear picture without ignoring or overly boosting the lows.

The focus for the Hesh 2 seems to be more on the mids and highs. It's nice to see a manufacturer focus on this realm when it's clear the drivers could have been tweaked to push out gobs of heavy, deep sub-bass. The end result here is the bass is dutifully represented?the new Atoms for Peace record, Amok, doesn't sound brittle in the slightest, and Flea's bass lines and the deep bass synth parts are delivered with richness and clarity. But the real standout feature of the sound signature is the clarity and crispness of the vocals and the attack of the percussion. Things aren't overly bright, but vocals are delivered with a nice edge to them, snare drums have a pleasing snap, and there's no part of the mix you can't hear. As previously stated, the Hesh 2, whether this was intentional or not, reminds me of a studio monitor pair, like the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro.

Bill Callahan's vocals on "Drover" have a nice treble presence that helps his voice stand out in a mix featuring some heavy backing percussion. The drumming itself has a subtle bass presence, rather than an overly-boosted thunderous sound, which can often occur on budget pairs that boost the low frequencies too much. The Hesh 2 also tames the intense sub-bass synth hits on Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," while highlighting the hi-mid attack of the kick drum loop and helping the vocals take center stage.

On classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the Hesh 2 fares less well. Here, it does sound a bit tinny and brittle. The lower register strings are nicely represented, but the higher register instruments seem to have a bit too much edge on them, which more or less cancels out the subtle bass response. It doesn't sound horrible by any stretch of the imagination, especially for this price range, but the Hesh 2 is perhaps better suited for pop, rock, hip hop, and electronic genres, for which it manages to tame the more intense elements of the mix, like throbbing bass, while highlighting aspects that sometimes get lost in busy mixes, like vocal clarity.

The idea of the "bass lover" is a curious thing. I love bass, for instance, when it's accurate, or slightly boosted. I don't want insanely-boosted low frequencies to gobble up the whole mix and vibrate my skull, but I do love when sub-bass frequencies jump out in the mix a bit. The Hesh 2 does a great job of allowing sub-bass elements to exist in a sound signature that is otherwise focused on hi-mids and highs. So, bass fiends may or may not love the Hesh 2, but if your looking for a fairly accurate, affordable headphone pair, especially for modern music mixes, it's a great place to begin your search.

If you have a bit more cash to spend and want to stick with this same overall sound signature, the aforementioned Sennheiser HD 280 Pro is a fantastic option, though it's a bit bulky and intended for studio use. The Logitech UE 4000?also delivers distortion-free performance with sub-bass presence that isn't overly-boosted. It's priced a bit higher, as well, but a worthy step up if you have the budget. If you really do want to hear some seriously boosted bass, of course there are plenty of options, including Skullcandy's own Navigator, which focuses more on the lower frequencies than does the Hesh 2. For the price, however, the Hesh 2 offers a clear, distortion-free experience. It's by no means a masterpiece, but definitely a solid value.

Rocket attacks on Israeli city increase miscarriage likelihood, study finds

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Rocket attacks in Sderot, Israel significantly increase the likelihood of miscarriages, according to a new study by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) researchers.

The study, published in the January issue of Psychosomatic Medicine Journal of Bio-behavioral Medicine, compared 1,341 pregnancies of women (exposed group) who resided in Sderot, an area exposed to frequent rocket fire, with 2,143 pregnancies of women who lived in Kiryat Gat (unexposed group), which is out of range of missiles.

Among women residing in the exposed town, the number of weekly alarms during the 6 months preconception was 2.2 with a range of 0 to 15.3. During pregnancy, the mean weekly alarm rate was 3.5 with a range of 0 to 31.

The study found that exposure to rocket attacks increased miscarriages (also known as Spontaneous Abortion) (SA) risk by 59 percent, as compared to women not experiencing this stress during or before pregnancy (in Sderot 6 percent compared with 4.7 percent in Kiryat Gat).

The Israeli southern town of Sderot has been a constant target of rocket firing from the Gaza Strip since 2001. The rocket attacks are preceded by a warning alarm that informs residents to seek shelter.

These alarms are loud, sudden as well as stress inducing because they are sounded only few seconds before the rocket hits the town. Between April 2001 and December 2008, more than 1000 alarms have been sounded in or near Sderot -- 500 during 2008 alone. Rockets have fallen and exploded within the town, killing residents and causing property damage.

The researchers also found that among the residents of Sderot those with both the lowest and highest level of exposure to rocket alarms during pregnancy had higher risk for SA than those with intermediate exposure.

Researchers suggested that this finding may be explained by dysregulation of cortisol, a known stress hormone, explain Tamar Wainstock, Ph.D candidate and Professor Ilana Shoham-Vardi at BGU's Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences. "However, as the number of alarms intensified, the risk was elevated again possibly with increased cortisol level, or alternatively, with reduced cortisol level, as found in Post Traumatic Stress Disorders, which itself may increase the risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes."

Other researchers involved in the study were Prof. Eyal Anteby, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Barzilai Medical Center, Prof. Liat Lerner-Geva and Saralee Glasser, Women and Children's Health Research Unit, Gertner Institute for Epidemiology and Health Policy Research.

CloudOn releases version 4.0, brings its productivity features to a number of Android handsets

A mere couple of months have passed since CloudOn outed its third major revision on Android and iOS, and today the productivity-focused application is making yet another numerical jump. With today's announcement of version 4.0, the app's set to expand on the previous iteration by bringing its Office functionality outside of Apple's famed smartphone and onto some that are powered by Google's mobile OS. This means Android users with a compatible smartphone can now view, edit, create, and share documents with CloudOn, which should be a rather familiar experience for those who've been utilizing the tablet app since its humble beginnings on Google Play. High School Student Dies During Trip to California

A Long Island high school student died during a school trip to California, according to a published report.

Newsday reports Seaford High School trumpet player Joseph Tutaj went to Los Angeles last week to perform with his marching band. He was pronounced dead Wednesday after being admitted to a hospital with a high fever.?

Tutaj's parents told the newspaper he called home a few days ago and complained about being sick.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore was described as a gentle giant. His death comes during a tough time: Tutaj's father is reportedly battling Stage 4 cancer and his family was displaced after Sandy.?

Economic Growth with More Equality: Learning From ... - Aletho News

Until recently, conventional economic wisdom held that sustained economic growth in any society could only be achieved at the expense of income equality. Today, even free market disciples like The Economist recognize that these goals are not contradictory?and that growing inequality, in fact, is an impediment to economic prosperity.

Recent data on economic growth and inequality for the United States and Bolivia reveal two starkly contrasting portraits.

The United States, after four decades of widening inequality, is experiencing the greatest economic downturn since the Depression. In 2011, while the economy grew by only 1.7% (down from 3% in 2010), income inequality increased by almost as much?the biggest single year increase in two decades. Over the past 30 years, the share of income held by the top 1% has more than doubled, increasing from 8% to 17%, while the share held by the bottom 20% has fallen from 7% to 5%. Currently, the United States has the highest level of income inequality of any developed country.

Poverty rates in the United States have risen 23% since 2006, now leveling off at 15.1%. Today, more Americans are living in poverty than at any time in the half-century since the census started publishing these estimates. Due to declining incomes, the U.S. ?middle class? is eroding, dropping from 61% of adults 40 years ago to a bare majority now.

As Nobel prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has noted, the United States? declining middle class is too weak to support the consumer spending that has historically fueled our economic growth. Thus, inequality is ?squelching our recovery??but U.S. political leaders have been slow to act on this lesson.

In contrast, despite the worldwide economic crisis, Bolivia?s economy is on track to increase by at least 5% in 2013, as it did last year. This is among the highest growth rates in Latin America, exceeded only by Chile, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. Since the start of Evo Morales?s presidency in 2006, Bolivia?s GDP has tripled, and GDP per capita has more than doubled.

At the same time, according to data recently presented by Morales to the Legislative Assembly, income inequality in Bolivia has significantly decreased. In 2011, the richest 10% of the population had 36 times more income than the poorest 10%, down from 96 times more in 1997. ?Bolivia is one of the few countries that has reduced inequality,? notes Alicia B?rcena, head of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). ?The gap between rich and poor has been hugely narrowed.?

Between 2005 and 2011, Bolivia?s poverty rate declined by 26% (from 61% to 45%). The extreme poverty rate fell even more, by 45%. An estimated 1 million people joined the ranks of the ?middle class.? The World Bank has officially recognized Bolivia as a lower-middle income country, a ranking that affords more favorable credit terms.

Between 2006 and 2011, Bolivian workers? purchasing power increased by 41%, as compared to 17% between 1999 and 2005. The minimum wage has risen 127% since 2005, far exceeding the rate of inflation. In contrast, U.S. workers? real wages have stagnated or fallen, with inflation-adjusted incomes now at their lowest point since 1997. Since 1972, the average hourly wage has risen only 4%.

In Bolivia (unlike the United States), domestic demand fueled by rising incomes and narrowing inequality is a driving force behind the country?s economic prosperity. Local evidence of increased domestic consumption and consumer purchasing power can be seen in places like El Alto, the sprawling indigenous city overlooking La Paz, where banks and fast food outlets are sprouting up and the first supermarkets, shopping centers, and cinemas are being planned. In 2012, there were 8.9 million mobile phones in Bolivia (with a population of around 10.4 million). Construction activity has outpaced the capacity of the domestic producers, with cement now being imported from Peru.

Rating agency Standard and Poor?s gave Bolivia high marks for economic resiliency last October, in underwriting a successful $500 million bond sale?the country?s first venture into the international credit markets since the 1920s.

Behind these positive indicators is Bolivia?s state-led economic policy, including the re-nationalization of strategic sectors divested by past neoliberal governments (such as hydrocarbons, telecommunications, electricity, and some mines). Around 34% of the national economy is now under state control?although private investment (on Bolivia?s terms) is encouraged and has continued, in hydrocarbons and other key sectors.

The vast increase in hydrocarbons and mining revenues under Morales has funded a major expansion of social welfare programs, including highly popular cash transfers targeted to the elderly, pregnant mothers, and school children. It has also supported major infrastructure improvements, a significant increase in the coverage of basic services (such as water, electricity, and domestic gas), and a major expansion of public healthcare and education programs?all boosting the living standards of average Bolivians. ? BOSTON - Juniors Jared Scheck and Chelsea Glincman of the Boston University men's and women's diving teams qualified for the NCAA Zone A Championships following a diving-only meet against Harvard on Monday (Feb. 18.).

Scheck finished in second place on the 1m board with a score of 315.90 while senior Jake Frankenfield took third with a score of 293.25 and Austin Kruger finished fourth with a total of 184.35.

Glincman clinched second in the women's 1m event with a score of 277.65.

Kim Goldman: Bringing Beige Back

Is life as good as everyone makes it sound on Facebook and Twitter? Everyone I read about or follow has the greatest husband ever, the most amazing in-laws, the best-est boyfriend, the sweetest kids in the world, the awesomest job and the hottest sex life.

Really? Am I the only that one that has some mediocre's, a handful of so-so's and a few decent's thrown into the mix?

Whenever I see updates about how fabulous everything always is, I find myself questioning the legitimacy: Is it really possible to be that happy all the time? Do those people ever have a bad day? Maybe they are believers in "The Secret" -- put good energy out, get good energy back? And don't even get me started on all those memes with the puppies and kittens!

I consider myself a happy person, but honestly, I don't exactly know what that means. Is being happy a state of mind or an actual feeling we have? Is happiness the same as being content? If you're content, does that imply you've settled? If you keep wanting to expand the walls of your comfort zone, does that signify unrest? Does it mean we are unfilled, if we are always seeking more? Ahhhh, the meaning of happiness is so stressful!

I am early into my 40's and experiencing a sense of calm that I haven't felt in a long while. But ironically, that same calm is making me antsy. I resist the notion of settling, and keep setting my sights on bigger and better, but I often wonder if I will ever be just OK with where I am and be content with what I have stashed away in my heart and mind.

I read so many articles about the "steps to happiness" -- mostly, they include health, wealth, education, relationships and spirituality, but if one of those is out of whack, then what? Does the whole system fall apart? I work hard on striking a balance between each of these, but if I am honest with myself, they could all use a little "make-over." Fortunately for me, knowing that, doesn't leave me feeling unhappy as much as it motivates me to keep on truckin'.

So many people I come across talk about their life as being "beige" -- (a term I use to represent ' blah.' It resonated with most, so I am going with it.) They speak of boredom, complacency and a desire to be more than they are. But as they speak their truths, they also acknowledge feeling fortunate for their family, friends, career and personal possessions .. but it is still beige in their eyes. "I just think I am destined for more than this," -- as if the 'this' is bad. Are we bred to think everything has to be unicorns and rainbows? Can beige be the next splash of red?
