Twilio (http://www.twilio.com), the market leader in cloud communications, is announcing the launch of Twilio Client for Android. The product, which is a software development kit (SDK), makes it incredibly easy for mobile developers to integrate voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities into their Android applications, essentially turning any part of an app into a fully functional VoIP phone. In addition to the recently announced iOS SDK, the release of the Android SDK means that Twilio Client is now available for 75% of worldwide smartphones, according to recent data from Gartner.

?With the launch of Twilio Client for Android, we now support the vast majority of smartphones globally,? said Thomas Schiavone, Director of Product Management for Twilio. ?With this many developers and our proven success on iOS, we know we?ll see some incredible and innovative cross-platform communication apps in the months to come.?

Twilio Client for Android contains several key features that make building applications with integrated communications significantly easier for developers, such as:

  • Real-time Presence - Developers can now build buddy lists into any app to help let users know who is online. The Twilio platform notifies an app when a user is ready for voice chat so that calls are only made when users are online.
  • App Backgrounding - The SDK can receive voice calls even if the app is not the current one being used. So users can play games or read email and then switch to their communication app only when a call comes in.
  • Cross-Platform Interoperability - Twilio Client supports Android, iOS, and web browsers so apps can make calls between any platform without issues. The Twilio platform also enables bridging VoIP calls with traditional phone calls.

Twilio also announced recently that they will be hosting their second annual TwilioCon on October 16, 17 and 18th, 2012 in San Francisco. Call for speakers and pre-registration for the event are open now. To register to attend or apply to speak, please visit http://www.twilio.com/conference.
